N16 Tailgates

Is the rust below the windscreen?
 
oh yeah I asked at the scrap yard and they said 40-45 quid but to be honest I think your better getting it off ebay. there was one there where the spoiler had been ripped off but its in silver.

the rust is just below and above the rear screen, plus another couple of patches. The ones on ebay haven't been that good, just waiting for a decent silver one to become available. Hopefully I'll find a decent silver one that doesn't require a respray.
 
Same as mine, the rust is forming underneath the glass, looks like a design flaw because if you park on a hill and the arse end of the car is facing upward then the water can collect there just like my mk3 golf.
 
It's a bit of a bugger really, as it's difficult to repair. As I've just spend about £700 on the car this month, just on basic repairs, the new tailgate is going to have to wait.

You are right mate it is a design flaw, we did hundreds of these under warranty, its to do with the way in which the window is bonded to the glass. Carrying out a repair without removing the window will not solve the problem. I was lucky with mine as someone reversed into mine with a spare wheel on the back of a discovery, so I got a new tailgate and window! no rust!:D
 
thats what I thought, just a pity there aren't more pics than the one on there, gonna ask for a few more.
 
Guys, would one of you cast your expert eye of this tailgate? Is it from a ph1 or 2? Not too worried about the scratches, as I can get these repaired but will need pics first.
Still trying to find the right damn tailgate. Can't wait to get the standard repairs done then start modding the car!
 
Well in that case, i'll be having a butchers at it, see what condition it's in! Luckily it's only a few miles up the road.
 
Just got my tailgate delivered. Good condition, no complaints!! Same seller on ebay also has another PH1 silver tailgate from a W reg. Going to be on ebay shortly. If anyone wants it, and its too far to collect(Luton), they will deliver to mine for free as I'm so close and you could collect it when you can.
