Can u get a bike rack for a p1 GTi?

Hi,

Thinking of getting a Mountain Bike soon and if i do i will need to get a bike rack for my almera gti (p1).

Has anyone used one before? if so what make & model and was it any good?

Also, is one of these racks likely to brake my rear spoiler?

Im sure afew of the lads with mountain bikes on here have said they were able to get them in the boot

The only trouble with the strap on the boot type rack is the roof tip spoiler gets in the way....but saying that i`ve still used it with 2 bikes on. Mines a `hollywood` rack. Bought it yonks ago....superb quality.

Paddy Hopkirk do good bike carriers but rowdys Hollywood one is one of the better ones. Try any good independant bike shop for the best price. (never use Halfrauds!!!!)

I use a halfords one - it was cheap, used to work there - haven't had any probs as of yet, but I do tend to chuck the bike in the boot or on the back seat. no danger!

kayak racking however, such a pain!

I have a halfrauds one, I used it a couple of times on the old P10 I had. It wasn't cheap when they were selling them back then (~1997), £70 iirc; it's a high level one so doesn't need the trailer board...

I was worried about bike carrying ability of the Almera when I bought it. I do alot of biking, so transport them about alot.

The best way of carrying them about is a towbar, which will fit on ok to a non body kit GTI with a small bumper cut.
Next best is roof racks.
Rear carriers are ok, and its what I use. But they are not ideal. The weight is put through a tiny area on the bumper and over the spoiler. I've ended up removing the rear seats and carrying them inside, unless the car is fully loaded.

I use a Saris bones rack, and its one of the best rear carrier you can get. But far from ideal on a Mera. I may sell it soon, as the missus has a car with a towbar now.

hi mate i have a thule one cost me £250 its got all the bits and pieces and its in good condition, didnt use it that often. Sell it to you for £100. that is a bargain

ps its a roof rack not one that goes on the back

Has anyone had any experience regarding cycle carriers since then?

I was gonna go for the halfords high mount but I'm afraid it will not go well with spoiler...

Them to put on the roof are more expensive and there isn't many that fit 3 door Almera...

Had a Halfrauds one on My N16 with spoiler and it was no problem at all mate.
