Nope, the foam is to stop teh fuel sloshing around when the level is low. The cup didnt hold enough fuel for the new pump so i've had to drill a couple of holes to allow more flow, the downside being the fuel drains quicker when being lairy. A 10cm layer of foam on the bottom of the tank should suffice.

but you shouldn't be using more fuel than you were with the previous pump, so the assembly should cope no problem?

No but more fuel is circulating and the 'cup' only had 1 inlet, maybe 6mm, so it couldnt refill quick enough. The return pipe goes back into the tank, not the cup.
 
ahh there's the difference, most return lines go back into the assembly, obv the n16 is different, how many holes did you put in and what size bud? as my walbro will be going in with the stroked bottom end so a bit of advanced info would be handy :)

8mm drill bit, I think I put 4 on the bottom and 4 around the edges, iirc. I removed the intank filter but put the HRC pump in the stock position and kept the fuel 'screen'.
 
In was thinking that last night, gonna pop down the scrappy and get another cup, have the return inside and just drill a couple of holes at the front, should stop the fuel exiting during cornering.

Wouldn't bother drilling holes if the return is in it.

it looks identical to the n15 one in the esm (though whether they are the same dimensions i'm unsure) as I was looking to swap to an n15 one to get the fuel gauge on the n15 dash working, but ended up doing something else

Is the foam going to sit firmly in the bottom of the tank or a couple of daps of sealer to keep it stuck down needed? Liking the attention to detail though. After the FPR/FUEL pump has been replaced are you going to get reconditioned/flow benched injectors in?

Mine were missing a good few CC's and not great flow pattern before & perfect after :)
 
Doesnt the n15 pump sit on the bottom of the tank? the n16 one sits inside a filter in the sender unit.
 
I don't know bud, haven't had either in my hands but in the esm the sender assembly looks the same

ok just checked and the top piece/sender assembly looks the same but the pump surround and placement is different

The N15 one is inside a pink box which slots into two rails on the bottom of the tank. The sender unit is separate to this and is part of the "inspection cover".
 
/\ lol im glad you got it sorted. I took the bottom of my sender unit off and drilled loads of holes on it and use metal cable ties to hold it to the side. it worked. only problem I had was the fuel gushing to one side when petrol was low causing a surge (no fuel) not a big deal though as it was rarely low lol.
 
Fuelling problem solved. Went to scrappy to get a new sender case. Swapped everything over into the new one, no holes drilled, routed the return line so it goes directly into the cup/case thingy. Fired up, ragged about, no problems to report. Lovely.

On the downside the noisey/vibrating front brakes is down to a warped disc I think. Why do I have such expensive brakes :(
