Why not just remove the bumper?

tapaT

Because the class I run in the silhouette of the car has to remain standard with the exception of some small aero bits and removing the back bumper would alter the silhouette.

I could cut out a lot of the centre section leaving the sides as they are but I'm not going to start faffing with that until the diffuser comes and I figure out how to mount it up etc.

Well with one event left the old sunny has done me proud. Currently leading my class and 6th overall in the championship. Should still take the class but I'll be missing a round so my overall place will drop, hopefully manage to stay in the top 10 or thereabouts.

Already collecting bits for the winter rebuild. Plans are as follows

Gearbox
4.785 Mfactory FD
Cusco MZ 1.5way diff
Fidanza Flywheel
All purchased and on route

Engine parts in possession
Janspeed head
C3 Cams
Eagle rods
GtiR oil squirters
BC Springs

Engine shopping list
1mm oversized valves
titanium retainers
C6m cams and solid lifters (if theres enough left in the pot)
Bearings, seals and gaskets
VE oil pump
4cw crank (sourced) which needs lightened and balanced
ECU (looking like DTA S40 or 60)
Was hoping to have enough left over for a set of jenveys but I doubt it so probably have to settle for some bigger injectors for now.

Body
General tidy up, few bits need touching up
GRP wings to paint and fit
GRP Diffuser to fit
If time/money allows cut out the boot floor, remove fuel tank and fit a small tank and swirl pot. (unlikely to get done to be honest)

And here are a few pictures from the last event

I'd like to thank the aoc members who have helped me out over the last couple of years with parts and advice. Would have been a bigger struggle without you!

Car is awesome, plans are awesome.

But i think i'm most jealous of the fact you've got probably one of the last and only n14 UK chassis' left that's not rotten and crumbled to bits! Love it!

Looks great is it road legal?

And would a VE head put you into a different class?
Mot is out on it now I think but wouldn't take much to get it through another one. The only dodgey thing is that thanks to new mot rules the drivers seat must be able to move to 3 or more positions whilst the driver is sitting on it and as I have a fixed subframe it isn't really legal. However there are sensible mot stations around who will pass a car that is primeraly used for the track with a fixed seat. Other than that, stick the headlight in, CAT in the exhaust and a set of plates and shes good to go.

I can run a VE head and stay in the same class but I'd like to stick with the DE for now and see how much I can get from it. The time may come that I feel the swap is required but I'm not there yet.

Proper track car. LOVE IT!

When I have more spare cash this is just what I want my car to be doing.

It's not massively expensive to do sprints and hillclimbs. No more than trackdays anyway. You do get less track time than on track days so some people view it as less value. I'd rather be trying to beet a time or someone else than driving round in circles all day though. £150ish for your weekends entry, £20 or so in fuel and your away. Tyres are probably the biggest outlay but if you go for a medium compound 1 set would last a year near enough. It is adictive though and like all things you always end up spending more than you planned to!

Having been to track days spectating etc and spending today at a sprint event, it was awesome as the drivers were just going balls out as they had something to try and beat.

Lovely car mate.

What are the accident rates like at hillclimbs? Want to do more with my GTi than just straight-line 1/4s but don't fancy risky my daily on track days. What sort of regulations are there? Much modding required to be eligible?

Accidents are really rare to be honest. Your on the track (or hill) 1 car at a time so if you crash its your own doing. This is my second season and I've only seen 2 crashes, one was during a mental rain shower.
If you run in the road going classes all you need is mot, tax and insurance. You need to have an interior for road going and the block and head must have been available to the model of car. SOme decent pads and sticky tyres and an almera with an sr20 would probably do quite well in sprints

I'm in B2 in Scotland but the classes are named differantly in the Brittish championship. Its still the same structure though, modified saloon cars from 1400cc to 2000cc. In the modified classes you can do pretty much anything to the car as long as you retain a block that was available to the car when new and the siloette is unchanged. Your allowed aero of sorts and can fit lightweight panels etc. You do need an msa approved rollcage, battery isolator switch and msa/fia approved harness but it doesn't have to be in date. Bucket seats are not manditory but if fitted they don't need to be in date either as long as they were approved at one point and are in good nick.

Its quite cheep to get into compared to circuit racing or rallying and a damn sight cheeper to compete. It's also a lot easier on the cars so wear and tear is minimul. Brake pads last at least a full season for example. Like I said before the only real ongoing expense is tyres unless you compromise some grip for longevity.

Not saloon car as in car with a boot. The classes are split into saloon car (anything from 800bhp evos to saxos) and sportscars which are mostly caterham types but also the odd mx5, mgf, s2000 etc etc. If you google the msa blue book there are proper definitions. Basicly in the eyes of the msa your almera is a saloon.

Will do the Googling. This has definitely piqued my interest.

Dog walks into a saloon.. says "alright, which one of you is the man who shot my paw."
