Got a problem with reverse gear

Hi Everyone,

I recently bought an Almera Tino SE+ 1.8L from the year 2001. Its a manual and i have problem with the reverse gear.

When i try to put the car into the reverse gear its not allowing me to put it. I can easily put the car into any of the forward gears, smoothly and with no problems.

The vehicle
The car runs very well, it starts straight away, first time, every time. It has bags of power and handles well. It has 133k miles on the clock and has full service history with 1 previous lady owner who brought it from new.

What i've tried so far.

play with the clutch and try and put it into reverse.
try putting it into other gears then into reverse.

What works.
if i turn the engine off and back on i can put it into reverse.

Any help or advice which you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Also i now that one cause of the problem could definitely be a dodgy gear box, im just trying to find out if it could be getting caused by anything else.

...or whilst trying to get reverse slowly raise the clutch pedal. You will find it should slip in then.
