    Hydrogen-powered Almera

Has anyone ever been brave enough to do the same with a dragster than runs on alcohol? Do they make absinthe at the exhaust?

    My new SR20 powered car...

Nice, always liked the GTs. Should be a really sporty drive as standard as well, no?

Tropical green GTI, near Forth Road Bridge

Couldn't see that well in the rear view mirror, but think it was S-reg, and there was a "T" in the last three letters...

Tropical green GTI, near Forth Road Bridge

Was driving behind me, who was driving behind a red Audi R8. You then turned off for Rosyth...

    Smoking??

lol, mine was probably running rich too since the economy was usually utter shite, way less than 30mpg...

    Smoking??

My SR20 Primera had bad piston rings, it used quite a lot of oil but it still went pretty well, although it did feel "rough" when revved. The GTI was really smooth in comparison. My Primera did have visible exhaust gasses, but since the headgasket also went I'm not sure if it was oil I could...

Mine started doing that too, wish I'd known about the .net thing, 'cos I had to click that "Privacy Report" icon at the bottom of the IE window and mess with the cookie settings...

    Couple of queries

IIRC, the manifold was fine, the downpipe that bolts to it had the pre-cat. Then there was the really obvious cat actually under the car.

Who's feeling the effect of the higher petrol prices?

Thought different territorries meansure it differently, so like our 98 was equivalent to a US 95 etc.? Even though they're all called RON... Ah hah! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

Who's feeling the effect of the higher petrol prices?

50 MPG is even more amazing for a GTI then!

Who's feeling the effect of the higher petrol prices?

50.6 mpg from a Xantia? Is that an HDI, or the old school 1.9 TD? Either way, that's one hell of a good average! :) 119.9 is pretty cheap for diesel too, it's upto like 129 here now...

    Not an Almera,

Is that a Marea with a Coupe's 20VT bolted in?!

    Thirsty Almera

Older design autos can be pretty damned bad for the mileage, yeah. And if it's actually physically quite old itself, like yours is getting, that can just compound it. May be worth changing the hydraulic fluid in the torque converter? And while you're there, maybe the oil in the box itself...

Who's feeling the effect of the higher petrol prices?

When it started to flicker on in my GTI, I used to do about 30 more miles before I got scared and filled it up again. I once did about 45-50 in the Scottish highlands though where I simply had no choice but to keep driving along some fairly hilly, twisty road until I got to a petrol station...

Who's feeling the effect of the higher petrol prices?

Kind of yeah. 32mpg is about what I get average, and I still notice it. Tallpaul86 is onto a good thing I think, just wish them cars were a bit cheaper 2nd hand. A diesel is starting to get pointless too, they've latched onto people using them more now, so they just slapped more tax on it, was...

    N15 GTi v GOLF Mk2 GTi

...but not to be underestimated still. I had to really try from a 3rd gear roll coming out of a village and going up a hill. If I'd been on the ball and in 2nd I'd have had no problems, but still, I was quite impressed. Are they really that good on petrol? A guy I know at work used to drive...
