1999 1.6 GX Automatic owner seeking advice!

Hello everyone. I’m new here but I’ve owned a 1999 1.6 GX Automatic for around eight years. Sad to say that I probably won’t own it for much longer because It’s just failed an MOT (details below), although it still has an existing MOT until 31 March. I hate the idea of just scrapping it (despite 114,000 miles on the clock and the bodywork needing some TLC, it still happily purrs along at 75mph and has never once failed to start first time). I’d rather give it away to an Almera enthusiast (probably with welding skills/contacts) who wanted to take it on as a project. Would welcome any comments/advice from forum members on this. Is it worth trying to fix it up or should I just scrap it?

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Here’s the details on the failed MOT:

- Parking brake: efficiency below requirements [3.7.B.7]
- Brakes imbalanced across axle Rear (Axle 2) [3.7.B.5b]
- Front constant velocity joint gaiter insecure to the extent it no longer prevents ingress of dirt etc Nearside Outer [2.5.C.1a]
- Subframe mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded Nearside Rear (outer sill) [2.4.A.3]
- Subframe mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded Offside Rear (inner and outer sill) [2.4.A.3]
- Rear brake binding Nearside [3.7.B.1]

Advisories
- Offside rear and offside front chassis corroded
- Brake pad(s) wearing thin Front (both)
- Both front tyres worn on inside edges of tread
- Nearside rear tyre wearing on inside edge of tread

Hi there
I have a 55 SE Auto which drives like a dream.....I took it in about 2 years ago as it had to have an airbag recall job.
Once with Nissan, they found a whole load of minor faults (£2,700) + problem with engine mounting (£300).
I'm no mechanic, but if you took your car there, you could buy a new one instead of all the repairs!
Also consider if you did have an accident, your insurer would probably write it off.....
Good luck

Hi Riad. Thanks for your reply. Interesting to hear your experience with your SE. Sounds like that was a nasty surprise with Nissan. It must have been a lot of minor faults to come up £2,700!

You are totally right in what you say. It really doesn't make any sense to do the repairs, so I've decided not to do that. I've managed to find a local parts dealer who specialises in old Japanese cars and they're going to take it. I'm getting a reasonable amount for it as well, so that's good. I am certainly going to miss it, though.

Thanks again for taking the time. Good luck to you too.
