Alloy wheel size guide

Hi

I was wondering if there is an alloy wheel size guide on here or if anyone knows where I can get one?

If I upgrade my wheels (2001 SE+) to 16" or 17", what size tyres will I need?

Is this the right fitting? -

Info from alloywheels.com (Formerly Rochford Tyres).

All the recommendations above seem to be around 3-5% smaller rolling size than stock so speedo will show faster than you are really going by that amount.

You can work out how much the new wheels and tyres will throw your speedo out by using this calculator.

I've got 205/40/17 on mine with 42 offset. They sit very near the outside of the front wheel arches (enough to worry me that they may rub when I drop it) so I'd go for the higher end of the offset for N16s, you can always get spacers if you get too high an offset but not much you can do if it's too low.

My 205/40/17 profile (as recommended above) is a bit too low - don't fill the arches well, quite a harsh ride and I need to keep the pressure well high or the wear is bad and risking damage to the rims when you hit even small potholes. It's also 4% smaller than stock so I'm only doing 67 when the speedo reads 70. Going to move to 205/45/17 which is as near to original size as makes no difference (-0.8% doing 69.5 when speedo reads 70)

Hope that helps!

I have seen some 16" alloys with 205/50/16 tyres, will they fit my SE+?

Maybe. Depends on the offset (how far out the hub face is from the middle of the wheel *) and the PCD (spacing and layout of the bolt holes) more than the tyre size (you can always change tyres if you have to).

205/50/16 is about 8% bigger round the outside than original tyres so will throw your speedo off by about that (you're speedo will read 70 but you'll be doing 75 so easy to get a ticket if not paying attention!).
Also that wheel/tyre combo will be about 5cm taller than original - plenty space in N16 arches so that may not be a problem but no guarantees.

* Too high an offset and the wheels can foul suspension/brakes, too low and they can stick out of the arches.

Cheers, very helpful. The wheels are a set of N16 (look like the sport+ ones) alloys for sale on NPOC, fitted with the 205/50/16 tyres. Can't afford to shell out for new tyres so may have to give em a miss.

That's a pity - if they are the multi-spoke ones I'm thinking of they are really nice for factory fitted alloys.

Actually I have just used that calculator and it doesn't look too bad -

Current 185 65 15
New 205 50 16
Difference - 1.63%
Speedo reads 70 actual speed 68.86

If these will fit without rubbing I may be tempted.

Hmm, I must have miscalculated. That sounds pretty-much perfect; shouldn't have any problems at all if it's a few percent smaller and it's an N16 wheel after all.
