Almera Dim Headlights

Over the last year or so my headlights on my 2005 Almera has been pretty bad. I've often heard it described as trying to drive with a candle, which is a pretty apt description. Installing Nightbreakers didn't help either. I've read quite a few of these Almera's had issues with the headlight dipped beam thingamabob overheating, causing the dim headlight problem. Unfortunately, Nissan South Africa didn't do a recall on these as far as I'm aware and customer service here is dismal to say the least.

I got a quote for the two headlight clusters and it comes out to the equivalent of £400-ish + labour. So I'm looking at £500+ to get these replaced, which is a bloody rip-off if you ask me. Before I do that, however, I'd like to make sure that I absolutely have to replace them.

What do I have to look for to confirm that the clusters need replacing in the first place?
