Danger (cornering)

I have owned my Phase 2 for 6 weeks. Twice the car has done 180' on me on both left and right hand bends that I have driven round many many times previously with no problem. I am not pushing the car anywhere near the limit, I have had the breaks tested + all ok.
Has this happened to any other owner or is it me or do I have to put sand in the boot or is it a common fault because of the suspension set-up at the back. It has not given me much confidence in the car on corners the only problem is there are lots of corners where I live.
Can anyone shed light. I will get rid of car if wont go round corners.
Please help before I take someone else out.
Thank You

Dear "rowdy-gti",
Front = Goodyear Nct 5 / 195/55/15. are 32 psi.
Rear = Yokohama s306 / 195/55/15. were 32psi. for 1st incident i then lowered to 28psi then 2nd incident.

The tyres were on at purchase + will be on until funds allow for toyo's.
I know the Nct 5s are milage tyres but the Yokos are usually not bad + all have good tread.
Ta.

is it standard suspension?

ive always found almeras to be really good round bends, embarrassed a mate in a slammed 106 in my almera on the twisty routes

cant help you mate, but mine absolutely sticks to the corners, so much so i stick my foot down going round them. at most it will slide a very small amount, standard apart from a 40mm drop, with 33psi front and 30psi back, my tyres arent anything special either.

the back end on mine is solid as a rock, wont move around at all no matter how fast i enter a corner, the tyres are terrible so the fronts often squeel a bit but the back never steps out of line or anything, im amazed you could actually loose it really.

only thing that i can think off is someone once mentioned the back end on ph2's has shorter suspension travel than a p1 and they can often bottom out when on a long sweeping bend at speed when there lowered, i would imagine the back end bottoming out would unsettle it enough to make the back end loose but with you saying you wasnt driving hard im not sure.

i dont think braking mid corner would unsettle mine enough to spin it, not unless you were really on the limit but your saying you werent, does seem very wierd, what kind of bends are they and at what kind of speed?

only time ive really had the arse end out is letting off throttle on a medium sized island while steering tht little extra sharp, only other time is in icey conditions. overall though, pretty sticky cars imo

only time i had mine out was a roundabout in the wet, it hadnt rained for ages so was loads of oil sitting on it but other than that it only goes out when i pull the hand brake on mid bend on a hairpin near to me :-)

Swap your wheels front to rear. When your in a bend your backing off so the front end is digging in and letting the back end go. i used to do it all the time for fun also tyre pressures should be 33 front 30 rear i think

my GTi used to get bit excited on bends too. think its becuase i had small 195/50/15 wheels on it though!

was kinda fun once learnt how to control it :p

my GTi was on lowering springs & 18" alloys, it handled better than my Type-R does !
have you checked the rear shocks for any leaks?

I am 99.9% sure that this is your problem. i had the exact same tyres (same size too) on my old cavalier SRI for a month, and i changed them. you could throw it sideways in the wet without using the handbrake with ease, it was dangerous. swap your tyres front to back for the mo, and it will be less positive - i.e it will understeer, but i bet the tail end happiness stops!! but get rid of the S306s THEY SUCK!!!!

if it was in the dry then id be worried, i can get the back end on mine out but only momentarily as it snaps back inline. if it was in the wet, your obviously going too fast

Many thanks to all for your replys, ideas,suggestions + comments. Given me a bit to consider, and things to try. Thanks and be careful.
