Engine stalling & cuts out, but only once tank is under 1/2 full !!

Nissan Almera Tino SE 1.8 Petrol...
Brought car a while back, it has taken time to get use to the screen selection & buttons.
I do regular long easy runs but found the car would momentarily cut out if going down a motorway (at just legal speeds...), always when at continuous speed, never round bends...
I also found tick over would cough and splutter almost stalling at rest, then return to normal ....
I then realised when refilling tank, there would be a whoosh of air back into tank when removing fuel cap - so I drilled a hole thro the cap, to ensure the tank will breath ok...
This has relieved the symptoms but they still occur - but only once the tank starts to get below 1/2 full...
Then they come back with a vengeance...
This seems to indicate fuel starvation / fuel contamination....
I believe there is a fuel filter in the tank ?? if so how easy to replace ?
Or any other ideas ???
thanks...

You're meant to get a woosh of air when you remove the fuel filler cap.
I have known of the n16 fuel filter clogging ( integral with the pump ). It also sounds like a failing fuel pump.

Its all under the back seat bench, so have a look.

i just replaced a failed fuel pump. as the fuel tank got lower, the pump gets hotter, it leaned out and wouldn't run properly. start it from cold it appeared fine.
