how long will it go?

lookin to buy an almera SRI, only prolem is its high milage!140,''

just wanitng to know what sort of milage you get befroe the chain needs to be replaced? or new engine!

It entirely depends on how the engine has been looked after. Id say change it now then you should have a car that will last you along time, if you look after it.

Aye depends how the previous owners have treat her... regular oil changes & servicing etc? thrashed the engine or drove like a granny?

How much cheaper is it than a lower mileage model?
I'd be questioning whether its worth it, I bought mine at about 125k and its now on around 150k and the problems are starting to show :( Could do with a new engine in tbh.

th3k3ymast3r and darchitecht before him! thing is i really like the car and an engine ?? thats gonna emty my bank!lol

probably been looked after well then.

sorry to be unhelpful! but it's just hit and miss really, i've just had a new engine cos my old one wasn't looked after before me. It was on 85k and already pistons rings worn and burning oil,
whereas my old sunny GTi was on 125k and still goin very strong. chain should be fine for a fair few k yet.

what's the rest of the car like? if it's well looked after, no rust in the usual spots, the engine's probably been looked after too:)

My gearbox and engine went at 140k on my SRi. Gearbox synchro started crunching and the cooling system got blocked causing the engine to overheat badly.
Even then I had failed to catch the rust before it got out of hand.
But then mine was driven hard since I got it at 116k. Before then my stepmum had it from new and it only needed general maintenance, IIRC it had one clutch change.

GA16DEs are cheap though.

If I was you, I would worry more about the condition of the shell.
Its easy and cheap to bolt in a new GA16 from a low mileage scrap car.
But its expensive and hard to make
extensive rust repairs etc.

You've also gotta take into consideration what effect that amount of miles may have done on the rest of the car..
Have the brakes been changed?
Tires good?
Any service history showing maintenance work such as CV boots, handbrake cables, clutches, wheel bearings, bushes? Anything which shows the car may have been kept well. Rust needs special consideration as corbs will tell you, his old SRi was pretty much drooping, snapped in half.

My personal car: 105k and burning oil.. Piston rings or valve stem oil seals. Engine mounts also went at 100k, causing gearbox problems. None of that deterred me because the shell I have has NO rust in the spare wheel well, seatbelt mounts, sills and front wings, there are two small patches on the back arches which are soon to be killed.

At the end of the day you can swap a new engine into the car in less than a day, and for probably around £150 from the right scrap yard :)

Personally id rather not buy a cheap car if I was going to have to replace the engine in the near future, seems pretty pointless

Hello Peeps,

Well the car will have two separate histories. The SRi I'm selling has a chassis formerly from a GTi and the engine 1.6 from a 5 door ambition which is now dArchitects car. There is slight dent to the os wing but that'll get fixed along with the MOT.

In terms of how long I've had it, I think over a year and a half before I acquired the GTiR in 2007, my brother had it before then leading up to the SR20VE swap. It was my daily runner 5-10 miles for the first 6 months, JAE 2006 being the furthest it ever driven then I moved closer to work (2 minute walk) so was hardly driven at all as it was centre of town.

The only major change was to uprate the clutch. The rest was local garage services, passed the last MOT fine. It had done about 130k before I got it. The engine is still going strong and I don't race it. I've spent more time cleaning it than driving.

Its not spotless on the chassis there are some scuffs about, no rust I can see, but I'll be getting the garage to look over it. The most expensive thing on it is the alarm at £500, you won't have any NATs issues. Probably a battery change as its not used very often I need to jump start it to get it going, but once running its fine or probably just needs to be used so the alternator can actually charge the thing!

mfthechef has the pics, was holding back before advertising it - giving him first dibs. Suppose it wouldn't hurt to start the ad tho. Still waiting on the garage to get back to me with an appointment.

High milage on these engines are nothing, I had a Primera 2.0 eGT that died at 206000 miles and thats only cause i raced an MR2 and sat at 7000 revs for nearly 2 mins and the oil pump gave up.

I reckon as long as you give it regular servicing and dont gunn it too much and redline it every time you drive it no reason it cant reach that

Not really, GA16's are bomb proof too, no reason that cant do high milage.

not loong ago a QG16 managed to hit 450000 miles on a taxi, and the GA is better than that

Hi, My ga14de is very slowly starting to show its age. My gearbox is starting to make funny noises ive currently just hit 115000 miles today, had a new clutch in at 113k. My question is I have a funny rev flicker at about 2800rpm to 3000rpm has anyone else noticed this in their high miler cars?? If so what is the cause i hope its not a stretched timing chain...

All the GA series have this problem i have seen it happen at 70k too, try changing the fuel filter thats resolved it in more thqan one occasion

I can recall changing that but it was quite alot of miles ago I would say somewhere in the region of 10,000 - 15,000 miles. Do you think I should go for it again? Also what would cause the fuel filter to reach the end of its life or clogged up!
