n00by question...

I'm gonna replace the standard speakers on my GTi with better quality ones of the same/similar size. Is it better to replace 'em with coaxial ones, or just standard 6.5" drivers? I'm guessing since the front has seperate tweeters in the windscreen pillar already, there must be a crossover hidden somewhere, so putting a 6x4/6.5 coaxial in the door may be pointless..?

Y'all can start saying "STFU n00b!" now. ;) :rasp:

i replaced my front & rear speakers with infinity 2way & left the standard front tweeters in place. sounded good enough to me & 100% improvement on the originals.

yeah, what mick said, if you dont want amp them and spend a small fortune, just buy some co-axials. i would disconnect the tweeters though, too high treble, and too low mid is the biggest thing people do wrong, although saying that, the tweets are soo small anyway, you probs wouldnt hear them over the co-axial tweeter

Are these supposed to be in an enclosure or something? or do the grilles make a difference? I now have "bigger" sound and can go a bit louder without it being painful and nasty, but there's still a lack of bass...

(Infinity 6512SIs)

if you need a bit of a bass punch get a small sub enclosed in the boot, that way your speakers can take the mid & high while the sub does the bass. you dont have to get something massive, a 10" would be easyily enough & you'll notice you can pump up the volume even more with a set up like this ;)

I was thinking that'd be the answer, yeah! I can sort of feel myself standing just out of grabbing distance at the top of a steep slippery slope...

also, beef up the arera where youve fitted your speakers, give them a sturdyier home, give better bass then, you can amp them too which will make a big difference.
its true though, you are the slope lol
i went for a headunit for the cav on sat, and ended up buying some rainbow comps, headunint, mtx 10" sub, mtx amp instead, its all good kit, and everyone thinks its sounds good, far to good to be in a shitty cav, but compared to what im used to, its kinda shit, already looking at amping the comps up, changing the headunit, and need a bigger sub and amp package,
i heard the same kit in a almera and it sounded much better in that, probably becuase the almeras better built, and smaller too so the bass doesnt get lost before it finds the front end of the car

Yeah I got some MDF which I'm gonna replace the Vauxhall brackets I put in the doors with, and sandwiching between the speaker and plastic bit in the back too. :)

If I amp them, I take it that would be for better control of the sound, rather than the power?

make sure you get an air tight seal between the speakers, brakets and the door

the amping thing helps alot with distorsion, when you get in your car now and turn it up you can hear the speakers starting to distort, and it sounds shit right?
what that really is, is your headunits amp distorting and the speakers playing it back to you, you have to have some really shit speakers for the headunit to overpower them.
most headunits reckon theyre 4x40rms upwards, but in reality, if you used a amp with only 2x25rms(and it was a decent amp though) the speakers would play louder, last longer, and sound much better, you get more 'depth' in the sound, loose some of the tweetery harshness, and gain some mid range sound

best bet is to look around for sub, and a tri channel amp, or a 4 channel, and use the amp to drive the sub and front speakers, and throw the rear speakers away
them rainbow comps i got are only £105, and for that price they are quite amazing, Im getting quite focus'ed imaging off them, and a lovely warm sound, a audison tri channel amp can be picked up for about £250, then theres plently to look around at subs, just stay away from explod, vibe, splx, fusion gear seems cheap and nasty, and most of the rocky fosgate shit(that stuffs gone really downhill)
or best bet, decide on a budget, go on talk audio, post what your budget is, what music you listen too, and wait for the replys, then you'll get a ton of different opinions, most of them bias(I cant say Im not bias neither though), but it could help you find the bets deals

cabling change is a must if your going to amp the door speakers, hard to get the wires into the door though, theres no holes in the connector block, bets bet is to use a dremmel, and drill a small hole underneath the standard harness(you dont want any water running down on this, its what fucked my locking up I think), and theres a grommet in the body a few inches behind the standard harness, if you wrap the wire in black tape before threading it(use quite a bit too), once its through you can bend it into the same shape as the standard harness, tuck it behind, and you have one nice and tidy job done
