Timing Chain Nightmare

Wondered if anyone knows of a specialist and/or garage that will change the timing chain on my Almera for less than the £1100 my local Nissan garage wants as this seems extremely excessive and I am sure someone knows of a garage that does it cheaper P.S. I live in Stirling, Scotland so the nearer to there the better

why do you need that changing if you dont mind me asking. that quote seems awfully expensive :( , good luck finding a cheaper one. :)

Is the car needing a new timing chain? They dont usually get replaced in the cars life time (unofficially i think its 150,000 miles).
Other than that I dont know any garages sorry

have you rang round local garages? I'd hope so.

Timing chain is knacked, stuttering under acceleration bad cold starting a common problem on the 1.5`s if you check they can go as early as 30k the parts only cost £250 its the labour that hikes the price up

I knw a guy who might do it for u, he's based in Glasgow. I could give u his no. n u can discuss wif him.

Why not have the engine swapped? I have the same issue and have been advised by a nissan scrap yard that it'll cost cheaper to do the engine change as you have to take the engine out anyway. Got a qoute for £500 for the engine and fitted, and it's also got half the miles (45000) so can't really complain, well except that it has to be done in the first place lol.

Hey guys.

What is the worst case scenario if the timing chain goes? I know if its showing wear there is poor perfomance as ye have mentioned but does the engine completely implode if it goes? also if it did somehow break, is a new engine all thats needed?

Thx in advance

its most likely gonna piss through fuel, pollute the cat and fail an emmissions test before the chain snaps... if it even will.

the chain wont snap on a n16 it just wont start thats worst case scenario its a common problem on these almeras lack of servicin dont help either im a technician 4 nissan and if u was down south id do it for 300 pound plus parts and u dont have to take the engine out it just needs the side parts takin off its straight forward if u no wot ur doin

If the chain is stretched you get uneven acceleration, severe loss of power and a pretty nasty rattle. You'll probably get your engine warning light coming on because the crank and cam position sensors will be out. Worst case is it won't start.

£300 + parts. Nissan parts are £400+VAT mind tho boi racer.

Get yourself onto e-bay and buy the kit that comes with chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets for about £160 and then it's about 4 hours labour in a garage so say £400 all in - that's what I paid which is miles better than the £1,200 originally quoted from nissan.

yea but i get trade discount as i work 4 nissan so thats alot cheaper lol it would be 300 pound labour plus about 200 for parts bargain if u ask me lol

Hi boi_racer08,
We have a 2001 Y Reg Nissan Almera 1.5 Activ with the infamous juddering/poor accleration issues with the Engine Management Light is now on continously. Don't know if you are still around but we would be interested in making contact to discuss if you can help us. We live north of Salisbury.
Kind regards
lbays1

iv just bought a Y reg almera 1.5 E for £500

got it this cheap because of this problem though, anybody know of any1 in the north east that could take a look for me? to make sure it is the chain and not something else

hi there new to the forum but desperate for help , hopefully someone can , we have the usual symptons for timing chain stretching from what i can see on the forum , garage has said engine management light relates to cam/crank sensors being out of sync , oil has being changed twice and flushed once has corrected the error for a while but then the stalling from cold comes back and will restart after a while does seem to be a lack of power lately but no noise coming from the chain from what i can tell , i have read that the tensioner can be checked to tell if the chain has stretched if the tensioner is protruding more than 10mm , i have no manual at present or can find one to download can anyone advise me of how to get to the tensioner easily i believe you take the rocker cover off and the front top cover off above the water pump is this coprrectand can the tensioner be seen from there , thanks for any help in advance we have a 53 plate 1.5s n16 with enginr type QG15DE with about 45,000 on it

cheers

I'm told you don't HAVE to take the pump off to look at it but you probably would to carefully measure it. Take a guestimation.

The error that's thrown up is that the cam/crank sensors are out because the chain has stretched so much they will be. Running like this for a length of time can lead to your cam and crank sensors to fail which is why the engine warning light comes on.

Whatever you do, DO NOT PAY NISSAN PRICES. Unfortunately you may have to bite the bullet to get them to clear the management light (if you don't know anyone else with the right equipment) if it comes on again and they are the only place you can buy the cam/crank sensors. Think they are £25 for the pair. Last time I looked, you could get a full timing chain kit, without the sensors obviously, for about £140 on ebay.

Very interesting that there seems to be more and more of these coming up and yet nissan still won't admit it's thier own fault for procuding a shit chain, even though if you take it to them to do the work, the replacement chain is a different serial number. Allegedly. ;)
