Won't start, any help much appreciated - electrical fuel?

Hi,
I am hoping that maybe someone out there may be able to help shed some light on the problem stopping our 2001 Tino from starting. It is petrol manual 1.8L.
The full story...
A few weeks back it would not start. Had crankshaft sensor changed, it started and run a couple of weeks until the fuel got low (not empty - no light) and wouldn't start again. Put some fuel in and after a few hours it started and run until fuel got low again (again no light, just low) and it wouldn't start again.
Thought it may be the fuel pump and RAC man said we should have changed cam sensor too so we did that. The fuel pump is fine and we have checked the relay and fuse. The relay is working fine, clicks when powered and checked for resistance. If the pump is powered directly it starts and runs. Putting a wire from after the fuel pump fuse down to the wire in the loom next to the driver's seat makes it work, but obviously that is not ideal.
There is an engine management light on - exhaust pollution oxygen sensor... could that cause it?
Any ideas gratefully received.
Thanks,
Deb

Does it run fine (when it does run) or is it lumpy and needs warming up before you drive??

If there is an engine management light on, would an error code reader give you an error code?
Not sure if Tino is OBD2 or OBD1 though.

Hi. Thanks for the replies. The error is definitely the O2 sensor, garage checked it.
No noise at all so thought chain unlikely, runs very quiet.
A bit more info that may help. When first tested the fuel pump was running 7.5v through it. When a 12v power was put direct to the pump the car started and then subsequently started fine repeatedly without the power direct. However, as soon as the car cooled down again there was then no power getting to the pump. It seems like something electrical was on its way out and has further degraded.... Not sure what that could be though? Have ordered a lambda sensor. If it is a sensor, are there any other than the cam, crank and o2 that can limit power to the fuel pump?
Going to get a code reader too, easier than trying to communicate with an ecu through a gas pedal.

So it's not the o2 sensor as still only starts with the wire from loom next to driver door to fuse on the fuel pump wire. Starts fine with this bypass. Hunting on hills though. Are there anymore sensors worth changing? Checking chain tensioner tomorrow but it does seem more like an electrical fault.
