Hi all!!!! I really love the Almera (n15's) and im on the search for 1, but im only 18 and will only have 1 years claims when i need to renew my insurance (hopefully). I want your advice on which engine size would be best for me and keep my insurance down? Im thinking of gettin the 1.4 or 1.4si depending on insurance. Of course i've gotta modify it :D , n wud like your thoughts on what i shud do to it and pics if possible plz. Cheers Danny :)

Get the 'Mera Si, i got one, got my insurance from CIS, fully comp, am 19, under mums name, declared alloys and lowered with tele/dvd oh and only passed my test the month b4 in the car and quote was £415. CIS dont care if you modify your car, its only when you modify the engine that it goes up with them. there is a thread at the top of the page in the general section bout insurance 2, hope this helps with the insurance question

Yeah as a starter 'mera, I cant complain about my N reg Si, its only done 60k miles, and to me its faultless! Im only 17 and my insurance is cheaper than my mates who have 1.1i saxo's and 1.2 clios!
And for all this in a Si you get full electrics all round, GTi seats (in the wrong colour;)) and a small hint of sport styling on the outside! Then theres the 16v engine, which is not bad, of course it aint the fastest car on the road, but its a stepping stone up to bigger things...like SRi's, GTi's and VZ-R's...lol:D

And here it is, as it stands at the moment....

Lots of bits to come however ;)

Kool, insurance sounds gud. at the moment i've got an escort 1.3efi. its slow and is costing me 900 on insurance. not bad to say its my 1st year on my own insurance, but i've been lookin at the almera and theres so much u can do to em. just gotta save to get 1.

After readin your post, i got a qoute from CIS...18 year old, 1 years driving experience, no convictions or claims, 0 no claims bonus, 98' 1.4 Esteem...£2796, talk about getting shagged up the ass, i have been qouted only £1200 from Bell, looks like i will be going for them within the next month ;)

On the Advice topic, id say get the Si, i think Gynx still has his very very tidy Si for sale in the 'For Sale' section (would like to buy that one myself but cant right now :( )

Any of the 1.4''s will do you mate, go for a 3 door they look better

The GX's are better than the si's as they are higher spec, with full electrics etc, but are lacking the spoiler.

Good luck with your search, and go for a 1998 to 2000 car if possible, they look better, and have better lights etc.

Yeh, like swanny said, 3 door looks better than 5 door in my opinion, but everyone has their own opinions! ;)

By the way, swanny, I have electric mirrors/windows/sunroof in my Si, what does the GX have extra??

Oh, thought only the GX had full electrics

Might have been an option in the Si then as when i was getting mine, the si I looked at didnt

I stand corrected ;)

Ye go for SRI the insurance isnt that bad at all. I personally havent or wouldnt have anythin less than a 1.6.

Don`t expect to get much extra power from the little 1.4 / 1.6 even after modding..........unless you spend sh*t loads of money.

But they are reliable if well looked after, nice to drive and a good stepping stone to the awesome GTi.

Go for the sri mate, good car all the benefits of the gti, but slower and cheaper to run:)

I had an sri for two years, lovely cars, modding wise the bes tyou can do is arounf 130/40 n/a, however if you turbo it you may get better results

Yeah SRi is pretty good, still quite nippy and quick (well anything would have been quicker than my diesel corsa i had before this), and cheaper insurance than the GTi. Whatever model you get just make sure it has been looked after and serviced and you wont have many, if any, problems with it.

As for pics you can look on the 'Members Rides' section to see what people have done.
