1.5 Hurricane advice please.

Hi all,
i went to look at a Nissan Almera 1.5 Hurricane with 91,000 mile on the clock and its a 2002 model with disc breaks all round. It has a full dealer service and it was previous owned by a someone who what a disability. The car costs around £1000

is there anything i should look out for?

Yeah, another one.

The 1.5's are notorious for camchain stretch.

Better to find a 1.8, they seem to fair better.

Front crossmember seems to rot for fun, give that a good look at.

Right thanks but i'm only 18 so it will be my 1st car so 1.8 is a bit big of an engine

What year is it? I think they sorted the issue on later cars. Still might have the gearbox issue though.

EDIT: just seen 2002, its definitely a risk. A lower risk if as you say it has been serviced properly but still a risk

I would just avoid it full stop, that's the best advice.

Timing Chain Stretch
Gearbox Failure
Terminal rust

N15 GTi or N16DCi

Rest bit limp/crap

Can always put SR20DE from N15 into a N16 but its not easy, and there's been a few attempted but abandoned/scrapped so can't comment on longevity

i really don't want a 1.0 i would like a bigger engine for the power kind of, i was also thinking of a ford focus 1.6 or Nissan almera 1.5

K11

I had one as a run around over the winter, bloody loved it, that was stepping down from a pulsar with probably 3x the power.

Don't be of the notion that simply because a car is newer its better.

There better than an almera, more common and readily available cheap parts too

Mum had 1.6 Mk1 since 2002 and only thing she has replaced is the clutch.

The basic 2.0 version Mk1 petrol could be great in your situation it doesn't get called the GTi or sport etc and as it happens its quite low insurance group for the performance

And you have lots of choice for upgrades brakes/suspension/interior etc from the ST170 or RS

i was looking at 1.6 mk1 2003

Yeah focus arent too bad.

You're never going to be able to insure a 'fast car', i had a 1.8 focus and it was dog slow. A 1.3 micra will be quicker and save you a few £.
