2.2Di - 90-k service and veg oil - urgent help!!!!

Hello all
Sorry it's a bit urgent and it's difficult to search as I'm doing this on my phone. I had a 2.2 td almera for three years and still hold that it's the best car I've had. I'm now looking for one for my dad
Found a 2001 2.2 Di with 100k on the clock for £1600. Which seems very cheap.
Got two questions.

It hasn't got anything in the service book since 70k miles. I seem to remember that there's a 90k big service? How bad is it if this has been missed and how much does it cost?

I plan to get it twin tanked and run it on veg oil. Does anyone have any experience of doing this in the Di motor? I run a veg mixin my other car but haven't read so much about doing it in this engine.

Many thanks look forward to reading more as time goes on.

sorry for the urgency but mny dad wants to buy tomorrow Am if he can and thought i need to ask before he does that.

Cheers

Not sure if anyone on here runs veg oil, LPG or anything to be honest!

I'm sure someone will know about the 90k service though.

Forgot to mention. When started it stalls unless you rev it a bit. Then runs fine. Don’t how much of an issue this is?
Seem to remember this could be related to timing belt issues?

Thanks again

Hope these help.

You are right.

The timing chain will stretch prematurely due to, apparently, irregular servicing and using the incorrect oil. Personally, I think this is a complete sack of shite but hey ho. I say this as the cam and crank sensors were known to be faulty and were recalled on 03 models onwards to apparently prevent this happening as well as the chain being a different part no.

It's an issue more on the 1.5 than the 1.8 and also effects the newer shape micra's. You'll be going along and pull away from a junction and notice irregular acceleration with it pulling lightly then not pulling at all then pulling quite heavily. In my experience, it took a week of this before the engine warning light came on. It's been knwon to happen at as little miles as 40k.

It's interesting to note the part that nissan will replace the chain with is a different number (from the 03 onwards engines) to the original, although they will not admit it's a problem.

i also found this on the aa webpage of recalls dont know if it will help anyone and it dates back to 2002

This was very common problem from 00-02 0n 1.5 N16 models iv done chains on id say 150 cars mostly 00 and 01 when i worked for nissan and the problem was in the chain it self it used to stretch and then but ur timing out and bring on ur engine light. an easy way to diagnose the problem is remove ur top timing cover(the small one on the side of the head)and look down at the tensioner and if the chain is stretched u will see around 12mm of the piston out and if ur chain is fine u should only see about 5mm. this had nothing to do with not servicing as all the cars we done chains on had good service historys it was just a crap design of a chain. The old type chain nissan used never gave problems in the n15 or any model up to 00.thats why people say that after 00 nissan started to go down hill quallity wise.

iv only seen 1 or 2 primera chains going but they were 02 1.6s p11 144 model which were practacally the same as the 1.5 engine.
1.8 primeras only gave fault with the cam sensors which is not a big deal to replace and the one u buy probaly had them done so i would have no problem buying a 1.8 my brother is on his 3rd one with no problems.

when i was buying my n16 i asked about this and i was told that nissan changed the timing chain in 03 to resolve this problem, previous chains were stretching and affecting the sensors

You are a leg-end. thanks for your reply. Its difficult a lot of what you read relates only to the petrol not the diesel engines.

Would the diesels likely have used the same timing chain? (Sorry I'm a bit of a mechanical idiot) Many thanks

I expect they don't but as we don't have much in the way of support for our diesels it's at least something to go by :O. Have you checked with a dealer that all or any recall work has been carried out in the past?

You want to be sure it's the chain before you get it done as it's a big job and won't be cheap no matter how you look at it.

Nissan will want 10hours for it. Well, the nissan franchise near me wanted 10 hours for it... @ £57 / hour + vat. Added to the cost of the chain, guides and sensors from nissan they wanted £1100 all in.

I got my chain kit from ebay and took it to a local garage and got it done for 5 hours @ a much cheaper rate. I think all in I was about £350 for parts and labour. I've absolutely no idea if this will be more or less due to yours being the DCi engine as I know naawwffinnnggg about them.

christ... i hope its had regular oil changes between 70 and 100k cause if not the turbo cant have much life in it. you CANNOT miss an oil change on a turbocharged car.
