2003 Almera Flare 1.5 Cold start issue

Firstly, hello all. :)

Hoping someone can help, I can't find anything on the forum. I have the N16 1.5 Almera Flare with a cold start issue. When it's cold it struggles to start, often needing a jump/bump start. I've so far replaced the air filter, MAF sensor, camshaft sensor and sparks. There’s no crankshaft sensor, just a blanking plate. I don’t think it’s the timing chain as once the car is warm or on a warm day it starts perfectly first time and runs as sweet as a nut, it is only when it's cold.

I couldn't find anything relating to an actual cold start value, nor could I find anything regarding the auto-chock.

If someone could offer some advice up would be greatly appreciated. I've had it plugged into an OBD II reader and there are no faults that relate to this issue

Also check battery connections, starter motor connections, especially the Earth connection from the battery to the chassis, the alternator belt and make sure it is charging properly.
Might be the battery is on it`s way out or a combination.
Anyway,some ideas for free :)

Good luck.

Try a new temp sender switch should be 2. 1 for the temp gauge and 1 for the ecu.
I have no clue as to there where about's on the n16 though and usually the ecu switch should be the larger out the 2.

I checked both coolant temp sensors and were fine, battery connections were fine and no issues with starter motor, the engine was cranking as normal.
Couldn't have been oil or heater plugs, it's a petrol. I replaced the spark plugs not long ago.
Enough driveway mechanics, I took it to a garage and the timing is out; timing chain stretched beyond adjusting. I didn't think it could be timing as once started it drives fine. The short of it is that it'd be a very costly fix so have decided the Almera is better off living at the scrap yard from now on.

May i ask what was the price giveng for the fix?
I'm having the same problem, low temperature engine won't start.. got compression in all cilinders, got gas in the ciliders, got spark, why won't the gas burn... timing i would guess

There timing only has to be out a small fraction for the cam sensors not to marry up with the crank sensor so ether fueling or coils could not fire normall.

Could it not be the chain tensioner at fault? all i ever read about the qg series engine's is chain stretch! and no you cant time these engine's up using a strobe light it's governed by the ecu.

How can we check the tensioner then?
Do we have to open the rocker cover?
Virtually every mechanic i've dealt with can't pinpoint the problem... maybe i have to go sell a kidney and have it checked at a nissan dealership? Very disapointing car this one... Geezzz

garage wanted nearly £600 for the fix, that includes all parts. Whether it was the chain itself or the chain tensioner I'm unsure. Either way timing was out so scrapping it and buying a 2002 Ford Focus was cheaper than fixing the 'mera.

Tiz a shame when things don`t work out :(
Why not offer it up for sale here?
Maybe an AOC member might give you a bit more than scrap :)
Best of luck with the new motor.

Hi guys, new to the Almera forum. was mostly on other forums but just bought my self a Almera again. A N16 1.8 Sedan. been having a similar issue. starts first time every time but it refuses to idle in the morning or left for a few hours but idles fine after about 30 seconds after start up. got my obd reader out and only throws a P0505 code. I did do a bit of research on it and I did find out that it is related to the IAC valve. replaced it and no difference. I read some where that if I cleared the code and left the IAC valve unplugged to see if the code returned then it was an ECU related issue. can any one shed some light or part with some priceless wisdom.
