advanced timing

hi guys had a search on here but cant find anythnig, i was advancing my timing last night but not sure what degree it should be on i just want a little power as i took it up to 19 degrees and my car would not go above 110mph so i put it back to normal and moved the dizzy slightly but wanted to get a excact degree to set any help please thanks.

i marked up where the orginal bolt was and moved it a tiny bit more to advance it do you think i should do it move it more or not????

do you know the procedure to change the timing? if not:
let car warm up and idle
rev past 3000 3 times
turn off engine
disconnect TPS
turn on engine and then procede to adjust the timing
turn off engine and reconnect TPS.

You should set it at 15degrees or 17.5 if you want to advance it slightly. Im assuming you have a GTi.

yes sorry i did the procedure correctly and when i took the TPS sensor off car sounded like air con went on, so the procedure went correctly but i think the timing liht was knacked disconnected the battery over night so now i will go see if there is any difference. What would be ideal for me as i have manifold decat cat back BMC CDA leads 85mm and plugs iridium??? thanks for the help

I've never disconnected the TPS to sort engine timing before. as long as you're not fiddling with the throttle it shouldn't matter. My si is at 20* advanced, I run it on super unleaded (haven't tried 95 but daren't as I don;t wat to damage the engine from pinking) and on a private stretch of flat road had almost 120 on the flat out of it.

yeah the procedure i typed out is from sr20forum and also the haynes manual.

the revving over 3000 3 times tells the ecu you're going to make a change, when u turn the engine off and disconnect the TPS and turn engine back on, it now knows your going to alter base idle or timing. thats why you disconnect the TPS.

you have to disconnect the TPS with the engine off. when i restarted mine, the revs rose to 1500 then dropped to 400 and then idled ok with the TPS disconnected.

the timing light just flashes when the spark plug on cylinder 1 sparks, i dont see how it can be broken unless the bulb doesnt work.

and id just set it at 17.5deg

make sure that the timing light is connected to the spark lead properly.. same thing happened to me and the light wouldnt come on.. turned out to be a loose connection..

Wildchild -My 1.4SI timing is currently 17 degrees BTDC, not had any problems using normal 95RON.

24 SEVEN - you say you didnt disconnect the TPS to do yours? Your timing is probably still on the stock setting if you didnt, as the ECU will have compensated.

nope. at first I thougt it was compensating, turns out it was just the RPM changing making the light move, and the fact the light I was using was old and knackered. Using a mates light that clips around the outside of the plug lead, I rechecked it and it's deffo on the far en of the timing marks, which is either 5* after or 20* before :D.

fair enough then..as long as its worked.

-5 is on the left, 20 is on the far right if your looking from the drivers side front wing.
