Advanced timing...

Iv heard that you can advance the ignition timing on a s15 by 18.5 degrees to improve performance, does any one know if this is true or not as im thinkin about getting it done, thanks :)

Maybe he typo'd N15

must be, his profile says he has an N15 GTi

pearse, you can advance it to 17 or 17.5 if you follow the correct procedure, which I cant be arsed to find just now.

Join up and search for it, but be aware some people have trouble getting the ECU into the correct mode for adjusting the base timing. This means the ECU will reset it back to its factory setting undoing all your hard work.

people like you?

I still don’t know how the ecu could retard the timing which is manually adjusted anyways.
I knew the standard ecu was clever but to pull out a 12mm spanner slacken the distributor,
move it and then tighten it back without you know is a well clever trick.

dont see it

Exactly what my boss at garage said. I told him that there was a trick to advancing the timing on the engine but the ecu sometimes retards it back. He didn't think it was possible that moving the dizzy, a mechanical part, to advance it was undoable but from what you read on here the ecu must have some way around it.

The dizzy doesn't regulate the spark. It just sends the position to the ECU. The ECU then decides when the spark occurs based on other sensor readings like engine temp, TPS, revs etc.

All you are doing is adjusting the cam position sensor. You need to put the ECU into the correct mode to accept the adjustments otherwise it thinks there is a problem and attempts to correct it. Same with the idle speed adjustment, you can't just twiddle the screw, you need to put into adjustment mode again.

When set at 15* then the ECU uses the settings in the timing tables in the ECU, if it's set at 17* then every entry in the tables is advanced by 2*. Pretty simple really.

i dont think people realise how clever nissan are, if you start your car and put the timing light on it, dont rev it or unplug anything and just put the gun on your timing marks, you can see the timing swapping franticly between 10' and 20', that aint a problem, thats nissan trying to keep you running perfect... crazy stuff!
