The hot weather arrives and I realise my air con isn't working. My local garage tried to recharge the system and have told me there is a leak on the 'evaporator'. They have quoted me £900 to fix it! £650 plus VAT for the evaporator itself.
My Almera is an 05 SVE. At that price I am considering going back to traditional air conditioning; opening the windows and sun roof! My other Nissan is an 100NX so no problem with air con there! Targa roof off and that is air con and a half!
Anyway I quickly decided to source a used replacement 'evaporator'. I used the 247 parts finding service. Seemed to work very well. I was quoted £36.80 inc. VAT and post. A saving of £710.70!
Then the problems began. What exactly is the evaporator? My local garage told me it is the bit within the dash that provides the actual cooling. The Rotterham based dismantler that 247 found said that was the matrix. My Haynes manual says very little about air con but it does suggest that the matrix is the heating part of the system with the cooling element behind it.
Needless to say my local garage isn't prepared to fit used parts even if they come with a guarantee, understandable I suppose. So it's back to DIY again!
Does anyone here have any experience of repairing air con in Almera?
