Airbag Deactivation.

Ok guys, hope you can help with this.

I have a 3 year old sister who is due to begin school next year. (My local schools enrol at 4yrs to make it seem just like a big playgroup so its not so much of an adjustment).

Anyway, as one of the schools she may attend is opposite my work, i have been 'nominated' to do the morning school run.

However as my P1 Sri has a passenger side airbag i cant as yet mount her child seat in the front legally, and i dont like putting her in the back as i cant see her to check she's ok (im a bit of a soppy twat when it comes to kids).

So i was wondering if there is a way to disengage the passenger side airbag either permanently or semi permanently with a veiw to re connect it when i sell the car?

Any help or advice would be great guys.

i know theres a method in the haynes manual, but thats for both the airbags so probably no good, i'll have a look this afternoon anyway

When i took my Airbagged seats out and put buckets in, the only way to keep the other airbags on was to bridge the seat wires with a resistor the same resistance as the seat, to trick the system into thinking the airbag was still there.

I guess it'd work for the passenger one? but i had to be very careful incase the airbags went off, so it's at your own risk.

good man for runnin your 3 year old sister to school, a man after my own heart

just put her in the back seat facing you, she can see you fine ;) that's the safest way for you both ;)

Yeah that is the only option i reckon. Reason i asked is that Peugeots and the mothers Corolla have a key activated switch to enable you to do this. Might speak to nissan monday. Thanks for the replys guys.

what child seat does a 3 year old have? is it one of the booster seats? if it is then i would put her in the back, could cost a passengers life by that airbag not working (assuming you disable it permanantly), i know you could say most almeras dont have a passenger side one anyway etc but if its there it may aswell work imo. nothing for a kid to mess with in the back either so you wont get distracted.

mine often has 2 baby seats in the back (foster 2 babies) and theres plenty of room, no electric windows etc to play with (ours are too young anyway but at 3 i would imagine she will press any button in sight etc)

maybe get a cheap DVD screen for the headrest to keep her occupied while shes in the car?

She has a full child seat rather than a booster, she's quite small for her age (born at 27wks, ask any woman and they'll tell you how serious that is) but she's full of beans so i reckon the back is going to be the better bet. Looks like moulded in dvd screens for xmas this year then!

Kelv's right when it comes to 'by-passing' the air bag's,
however you should be able to disable the air bag system by simply removing the fuse if its just for short journeys ?
