Hey guys, now joining up, seriously considering buying a 98-99 Almera, with it's sr20de power...aarrrhhhhh!!! But been doing some reading about the Pulsar, and I am impressed about it's standard bhp. I know the Pulsar is 4 wheel and comes turbo, which I don't think I would be able to insure anyways. But very curious about how much difference there is between the 2. Secondly, eventually when the time is good, would I be able to easily get parts/upgrade the Almera's performance?

Hi mate and welcome to the site :D

Yeah you can buy alot of things for the Almera, anything from Rocker covers, FSE power boost valves, or even Performance Exhaust manifolds...

I personally don't own a GTi (wish i could afford insurance) :(

but they are fantastic cars, from what i hear they are very reliable...

I always think the Pulsars powers a bit much for the streets.. unless ur wanting to take it on track days etc...

major difference between them. 143 V's 220 BHP standard. Chip the pulsar and wind up the boost a little and your looking at around 280. Chip the Almera and your looking at about 153 BHP. Pulsar is also much lighter.
To get big figures from an Almera, say 220 BHP, your gonna need to spend quite a few quid. Chip, Cams, head work, filter, exhaust, all that for sure. You could go the throttle body route, but they alone are gonna set you back around £2500. Think they give you gains in the region of 30 BHP

Totally differerent animals, not least because the newest GTi-R you could hope to find is already a decade old

From an insurance point of view you're still looking at the difference between a 'hot hatch' version of a basic family hatchback vs. a jap import racer

From my own perspective, for the two reasons above, you've got to be pretty hardcore to want a GTi-R over the 'sensible' choice

Almera v Pulsar

woowwwww!!! That was quick. Thanks fellas. I am not a drag strip kinda fella. Will be looking forward to chipping, brakes, exhaust, and poss cold air intake. May even think about convertng the rear to Disc as well. Would love to take her on a day at the circuit to have some fun after. The Pulsar (thanks for that) is NOT for me right now. Hope to keep this when I buy for a couple years.
oh- as is it me, or do you think somethings gotta be wrong here....

(Newer Shape) One Owner Genuine 28k From New. Azure Blue Metallic, A/C, PAS, Electric Sunroof, Windows, Mirrors, Remote Locking with Nissan Security System, 28k with Service History. HPI Checked. Warranty and Finance Available. for £2,995.

hmmm can't copy and paste a pic. some script prompt keeps coming up.

convert to rear disc?
the only Almera that comes with the SR20DE is the GTi, and this already has rear disc's.
As for prices, they are all over the shop at the minute. Some go for £1000 some go for over £3000. You also have phase 1 and phase 2. If you do a search on this forum, i guarantee you'll find everything you need to know ;)

Not just the GTi came with discs, it was an option on some models.

A rear disc conversion requires a complete rear axle from a donar car.

If your not after the drag strip power day in anddayout, go for the almera mate :)

I would choose the Gti, as i wouldnt b able to keep myself sane with that amount of power out of the Pulsar lol

Your choice mate,

Nice fast motor OR insanely quick turbo with possibilities of mid 3 figures BHP ? lol

i know what i would choose :D

I live in OZ and I have owned both and the Pulsar GTiR is a very fast machine You will need to have alot more money to burn as they use more fuel and you can't help yourself when your driving it to put your foot down a little and guzzle all that fuel. (But fun) I had mine for a everyday driver and used it for work, hurt my pocket a bit.

I have owned an Almera GTi and now own a GTI-R
They couldn't even be compared, the Almera is a quick car for cheap but its tremendously heavy and tremendously underpowered. It's no where near the same league as a GTI-R. You could spend thousands on a GTI and it's get you to around 170 bhp. Spend about a grand on a Pulsar (boost controller, front mount intercooler, fuel pump, exhaust an filter) and youre chatting 300+bhp. Most pulsars are already modded anyway but you have to spend a fair bit on TLC which I found out as I spent nearly 2 grand on some tender loving care in 2 weeks. Insurance is also a killer.

GTI's are quick sexy cars but after owning one for 18 months I was utterly bored with it and unimpressed with the performance of it for the amount of money I was putting into it. Its a great car to have as your first quick car though. I went from a 1.4 Sunny to it and while it felt faster, it didnt feel liek the jump between an almera and a pulsar.

Am i right in saying that there is a pulsar 2.0 turbo front wheel drive only ???

 I heard a while ago a guy owned one of these, but maybe it was a 1.6 pulsar with a transplant without the GTIR chassis ?? hmhmhmhm.....

All Real GTI-R's are 4WD none are front wheel drive unless the GTI-R engine has been put in FWD car like an almera or a 1.6 sunny etc

Ahhhhh i see....

Oh well, i wondered why they would do sumthing as silly as that :P lol

Cheers for letting me know...
