Almera head gasket issues.

Hello! I am a brand new member so hello to you all. Main reason I joined is to seek more info on a dilemma I currently have.
So the story is I own a Peugeot 307 diesel which I am currently selling and rather than get screwed by the main dealer I thought i'd sell it privately for more money. So in the mean time I needed a run about to keep me going short term and bought myself an almera, x reg 1.5 with 71,000 on the clock. Six hundred squid.
Now I kinda like the Almera and i'm thinking I wouldn't mind a newer higher spec one in place of my Peugeot when it sells. However I won't be buying another 1.5 if it's as slow as this one. I mean if you're on the motorway and put ya foot down at say 60-70mph it really takes it's time to respond and struggles to keep up with traffic. On normal roads it's just as poor, second gear is gutless! Just no urge whatsoever. I've been in 1400 Hondas that would leave it for dead. Thing is though it's come to light this car has issues, it was running a lot more sluggish than this and it was losing a lot of water. This was improved by throwing a k seal in the coolant which is very ominous really as this means it's got issues with the head gasket or cylinder head.
So what i'm wondering is, is the 1.5 just a slow gutless engine or is this car only so poor due to the engine being a bit goosed? If I did get another i'd get the refaced one from about 03 onwards because I've read the 1.5 has been uprated with another ten horse power lol.

I had a 2000 model 1.5 for 2 years ran like a dream now my son has it, its what made me get another almera, guess you just bought a lemon.

Yeah I reckon I have although if it keeps me going the next few weeks I'll be happy. So does your 1.5 go well when you want it too? Climbs freely up the revs and that?

yes it pulled very well, quite nippy really for a 1.5 and would sit happily on the motorway at 80mph with plenty of overtaking power in reserve, dont get me wrong it wasnt super fast but on par with say a 1.6 zetec ford of the same class.

That's a lot more powerful than my runabout that's for sure lol. With this thing if I get slowed to sixty in heavy traffic and everyone begins speeding up again I get left behind! Thanks for clearing that up. :)

If u do go for another after the pug sells id say go for a DCI rather than a 1.5 or 1.8 petrol, more mpg alot more poke and my ins went down by 100 quid even though its a 2.2.

Infact according to auto trader the average mpg is 47.9 mpg. I don't think that's enough to make me go for the diesel, lovely car as it is. My pug will do upper fifties mpg easily.

Yer that figure is about right for an average, 99% of my travel is motorway so its doing ok. 80mph mostly at around 2200 rpm in 6th gear.

My 1.5 was pretty slow. Was ok if you kept it above 4k revs on b roads but pretty gutless at motorway speeds.

Just too heavy a car for the size of the engine. It's tuned for economy too but as you have to rag it to get anywhere I got the same mpg from my 1.8.

the reason the 1.5 is slow is it's under-powered. in development stage it was intended to be nissan's first 5 star n-cap car. They went £1 million over budget trying to do so by reinforcing the the body, end result no 5 star and the 1.5 wasn't as well suited as it was originally intended because of the additional weight, but the cost of redesigning the engine(further over budget) wasn't considered feasible. Didn't help that the qg was a low emission based design principle over the performance aspect. 1.8 is better but no rocket ship like the primera gt was! fuel consumption needn't be an issue though, go for an lpg conversion and your halving fuel costs so you can mod the 1.8 all you like and still cut running costs. Diesel belongs in agricultural vehicles!
lpg gives pretty much the same in performance and emissions, without the costs.
