Almera Tino 1.8 p0171 - my solution

Just thought it might help some others out if I posted how I fixed mine.

Symptoms were: Engine light coming on, sometimes going out by itself. ODB code reader always gave me p0171. Driving mostly ok, but sometimes jerky/snatchy on very light throttle. MPG noticably increased, usually get 33 mpg average, was getting more like 28 mpg.

After reading everything I could on the internet, cleaning the MAF, checking everywhere for vaccuum leaks, etc. I decided to replace the front O2 sensor (lambda/O2/oxygen sensor, whatever you want to call it). The result was instant - smoother driving and improved MPG. Seems to be the cure as it's been three days now and all looking good.

Was quite easy to change with a Sealey oxygen sensor removal socket. I paid out for a Bosch replacement part with the correct electrical plug fitting (instead of a general one which you wire in yourself).

Hope this helps to save someone else from going bonkers.
