Annyoing problem... help!?

Hi all,

I recently posted a question about my brakes, thinking that I might have a stickly caliper as the car has been juddering a little but have found out today that it can't be this and now I am stuck as to what the problem could be....

It seems to happen at lower speeds, around 2mph-15mph. Say you are coming up to a junction or traffic from 30mph slowing down, lets say you are now in 2nd gear going 15mph, when you come off the accelerator, with you foot on none of the pedals, just using the engine braking to slow you down before using the brake, the car is very juddery and looks like its kangarooing!

It only does this when not using the accelerator and whilst in gear between 1-2k revs. Looking at the rev counter, the revs are going up and down as it judders, they are just gently going down like you would expect them to.

So I thought it must be a siezed caliper/warped disk that is causing this but then I tried putting my foot on the clutch and its then as smooth as anything and glides along with no problem at all and will roll along, coasting perfectly, even at very low speeds, so I guess this puts the brakes out of the question.

So it only happens at low revs, only when not accelerating and completly stops when putting your foot on the clutch. So I am thinking a number of things but would like your views and opinions. And before anyone says anything, it is not my driving techinque!!!

Thanks everyone,
Russ

You'll get used to it, you just have to keep dipping the clutch then feathering it back out again. You wan't to drive mine, like a kangaroo on Acid.

Possibly worn/soft engine mounts. Mine used to do this.. To the extent where something was hitting the crossmember.
At that point I chose to change my mount inserts to poly uprated ones.

Yes it is a GTi.

Wow I was thinking the worst. I suppose I will have to get used to using the clutch a bit more then. Thanks for the advice.

Perhaps there is a cure for this? Could it be for any particular reason? Idle air control? running too lean? Air flow restriction?

Does anyone not have this problem? Perhaps we could find a cure? Or do we just have to live with it?

Joe, thanks for your suggestion. I was considering this as well, but then it stops when pressing down on the clutch and coasting at the same speed so think that would rule this one out. I will be checking the mounts anyway. Rather be safe than sorry.

Tks

I think you just have to live with it. I wouldnt engine brake at 15mph, theres little point really. I just take it out of gear and let it roll up to the junction, mines quite violent otherwise.

Thanks all,

Sure I will get used to it! Helpful to know its normal though. Saved me a weekend of worrying!

Cheers all

Mine does this too. Just one of the many Almera quirks you gota get used to. Won't be long till you get used to it and will find the best way to control it in your car.

my brains not really working so cant think of how to type this

putting the clutch in would stop it juddering, thus removing the motion the engine would put on the mounts so its worth checking them

I`d also go along with fooked mounts, my front is non-existant (there`s a good inch of movement when you rev it).

Does it also judder when you pull away at an angle (out of a parking space), mine`s started doing this recently, so am gonna get one of Tommos solid front mounts & polymounts for the others.

you will see a good difference just replacing the front and rear mounts, the side mounts have no real reason to wear, its 10x easier to remove the engine brace aswell when replacing them ;)

hope your right sam, the 1.4 camw apart lovely but project pita wants to kill me so all the bolts will probably snap. fingers crossed eh....

I never worried about anything snapping on mine, just got on with it, with the bumper removed you can see the top of the bolts at the front through holes in the crossmember which makes it very easy to spray wd40 etc onto the actual threads ;)

the rears shouldnt be any trouble at all, big ol bolts, that have no way of getting wet, = no rusty

I tried to replicate this problem earlier and I have to say mine is very smooth and doesnt suffer from this at all. Only thing I can think of is that you might need to be gentle with it. I can make it kangeroo if I want but it wont do it otherwise.
