Any Almera Mechanics near Coventry?

Hi all, ive got a Nissan Almera which was suddenly giving me a lot of problems. I posted a topic here:-

http://almeraownersclub.com/threads/n16-almera-gearstick-shaking-on-motorway.47914/

I took it into a local garage, mechanic is an old guy, been in trade for 40 odd years so tons of experience. At first he said it is the crankshaft sensor, he changed that, it was a bit bitter, but still running very rough. Then after anothe rmornings investigating, he said the fault is a stretched timing chain. He said he would only need to eplace the tensioners, but due to the amount of work, he will charge £350 parts and labour.

I took it to another garage and the mechanic there said you have to change the chain and tensioners, not just the tensioners as parts of the chain could also be worn. he said he would get the kit for about £180 and charge another 220 labour to do this, and would take at least a days work. so £400 overall. Is this reasonable or expensive?

Is the 2nd mechanic right, as in do you have to change the whole thing?

Also are there any reliable mechanics on this forum who could do this work for cheaper, as i'd rather pay someone experienced doing this and know its going to be fixed as opposed to pay someone hoping they MAY be able to fix it??

many thanks in advance.

If your tensioner is more than 12mm extended then it is likely to be a stretched chain. It throws up an engine light usually. Either crank shaft sensor related or one bank running lean. You need to get it plugged in to see if any fault codes are present in the ECU. The job of replacing the chain and tensioner I fairly involved and that price seems about right.

Thanks for reply. Mechanic plugged in machine and it did show system lean. He changed the crank sensor but this made little difference. My car is worth about 600. Would it be worth getting this done for 400? If so would u recommend just tensioner or whole chain replacement?

The chain is the issue, not the tensioner so defo change the chain.

Whether its worth it or not is down to you, if you are keeping the car for a while then yes, probably.

Same issue here on my 1.8 .
Changed both sensors,no diff.
After a while driving it like this I can hear now the sound of the chain.
Buy the kit from eBay,the most cheap is 120£ so I'll be happy to find a mechanic in Aberdeenshire that will do it for 200£.
