any DIY guides to getting bass frequencies right?

Call me chav or an idiot or whatever. don't really have a great idea what I'm doing with this, but I'd like to get the best out of my sub because atm I don't think I am doing. any DIY guides to geting it right or any nbasic setup guides to get me started? it's an Alpine SWR-1221D and a QX series QXT 200 amp, closed box.

just fiddle abot with the gain untill it sounds right im not too sure about the rest just have a little fiddle make sure it aint distorting tho

main problem is I'm getting loud bass in the middle and loud bottom end kicks, but a lot of everything else isn't as loud, and the higher bass isn't there at all. Been thinking maybe 2 10" subs would cure that instead of 1 12". don't want to spend much though as I'm skint already.

nah keep the 12 id say ive got 2 12" with the standard speaker front and rear in the gti n it sounds mint what about eh settings on ur head unit ? turn the bass down for the speakers and use the amp for the bass in ur subs put the treble more than half, that way ur speakers will be louder n clearer with no bass through them so u can put it louder n then set the sub up

I've got the bass at -3, any more than 3/4 (roughly half) on the treble and I get terrible sibilance, and I'm getting enough treble as it is. my front speakers aren't amped atm but my rears are, though i've got a 4ch waiting to go in asap which should help. I listen to a lot of rock (Clutch, RATM etc) as well as more bassy stuff (Mr Scruff, Ugly Duckling, Prodigy etc) and find that I'm note getting anything like as much bass as I should be when listening to rock stuff. Read somewhere that 10" can be better for that sorta thing, so decided that maybe 2x 10" would be better allround for the stuff I listen to than the single 12".

The amp is a QX series QXT 200 and a 12" Alpine SWR 1221D. these amps aren't the latest thing by any means, but I've only heard good things about them and it was 1/3 off on CAD when I bought it. I'd happily buy another one and run 2 10" subs off them. would be symmetrical in the boot too :D.

What differences do the sub enclosure dimensions make? Naylor said in a previous thread that ported was louder, sealed was more musical so I decided not to port the box I already had. I'v no iea on the dimensions of it though. it was the box a nasty cheap VRX sub I once bought came in.

thats where people go wrong setting up their sound systems, I used to do the same(very long time ago though lol)
turning treble up and bass down to get it to go louder is wrong.

the way I find it easyist to set a system up is to turn the sub off, turn the volume to a good listening level(like where you normally have it) then set it so it sounds good, bass probs about +2/+3 treble usually 0/+1 then add the sub and use the sub settings on the H/U to set that, or via the amp

the rear speakers could be drowning out the bass, or it could be the sub, whats the rear of that model like? with speakers, size does matter, the casing should be thick, strong, and with a big magnet, have a look at the vibe subs and stuff like that in hellfrauds where they have them on display, they have smaller magnets than my components lol

what size is the box? would you say, small/medium/large?
I'd say it was the sub though being a bit weak.

but rock is the hardest to set up imo, with the high treble you get some times can sound harsh, and the many different bass lines can cause the speaker to start to 'fall behind'

it's a dual coil thing, 1 channel from the amp to each coil, 2ohm each eithr totalling 89.4oz or that much each, not sure (according to that manual thing anyway, too cold outside to take it out of the box for pics). the sub & box I originally bought was this POS which I never used (sold the sub alone for the same price I bought it to some eBay numpty :D). put my alpine inside and put more holes in it for cables and stuff for the 2nd coil. it's lying on the angled surface facing up and back slightly towards the back window. certain tracks and frequencies I'm getting enough bass to make my eyelashes tickle so the sub is capable, but that's only with bass heavy stuff like some Mr Scruff/Cypress Hill tracks.

rear speakers are infinity kappa 693.7 which are an absolute shiteload better sounding than the alpine S types I used to have, so I want more to replace the s type components I have up front, unless for a similar price (under £100 on eBay) there's something better.

thanks for the advice :D.

[edit] also got a QXT 455 to amp all the speakers instead of just the rears. hoping that will help reduce the sibilance.

I had a quick look on CAD for that sub and couldnt find it, founf some swl and sw summit or others and they were all cheap tat, but yours being a dual voice coil means it shouldnt be cheap tat, or it could be cheap tat because it is a dual voice coil and was cheap if you know what i mean, alpine have no respect from me

but your box is small if thats the one, stick a port in that may help, if not its only a box to replace

ok thanks. They don't make the 1221 anymore. been replaced by the 1222. I bought the amp from them reduced from £150 to £100, but the sub was off eBay.

Tried setting up the thing the way you said and you were spot on. far too much treble. without the sub it seemed to be best at +1, but with it I decided 0 was better. Thanks for that :D:D:D.

I'm still not sure what to do with this 10"/12" sub idea. The very least I'm going to do is get a new sub. this one's a bit scruffy and has a small scuff in the rubber in one place. Thinking I might get an Infinity sub, as I'm impressed with the speakers I bought off them, and I can't really afford to get 2x10" right now either, as I'd need another amp as well. Any other good 12" sub makers you know that will run off that amp?
