Any ideas what this problem is ?

We have a 1997 Almera 1400cc active. A few weeks ago it started to judder quite a lot but not stop running. Every now and then it would clear and run like a dream but it always comes back. I have put new plugs and leads on the car but it makes no difference. I am no technical person so any reply would have to be at a lay-mans level I am afraid !!!

Could be an injector or its connector. When it's playing up, take a connector off one by one and see if it alters the tickover. It should. If one doesn't, that's the culprit. I had this on a 1.4 too and all it was was a poor connections, some wd40 and all was well again.

Maybe worth cleaning the MAF. The soldered joints sometimes degrade over time.

Sorry , but what is a MAF and where on the car would it be ?

Look for a part with a wire coming from it somewhere along the air intake pipes before the engine.

Yeah definitely.

And the 1.4 does not have a "traditional" maf. It's all built in to the throttle and i've never heard one fail.
