arch rust

got a bit of rust forming on the lip to the rear arch  its where the arch lip comes to a stop.
at the moment until the weather gets better ive put some grease on the edges to deter the water (hopfully)
its not to bad at the mo but i want to rub it back before its on show on the outside of the car, but my question is..
once ive rubbed it off i will treat it with rust remedy shite that is suppose to kill and protect, does it?
is there a product to put over the paint after painting to stop the rust attacking the edge again?
thinking wax or maybe a clear silicone bead on the edge.. i will be undersealing everywere at the same time but its the edge of the arch im worried about as i dont want some unsightly black sealer on show, ideas welcome..
i think rolling the arches will cure the problem but this meens money which i dont need to be spending

That rust stuff does work but only on light surface rust, you need to do all the hardwork yourself like sanding back the rot, if it's that bad.

both skins on my rear arch had bubbled and rotted right though, i could have pulled a big hole in the arch with my hands if i wanted to so i took it to a pro bodyshop and they sanded it all back and filled in the gaps with fibreglass then painted it all and it looks new, only time will tell if it will come back though :(

As long as the paints a good coat everywhere it will be hard for the rust to come back, it needs moisture and oxygen and if you deny the metal this it cant rust. when undersealing make sure you get behind the lip on the top of the arch, thats where the debris and moisture collects and forms the rust, and its a neat place to stop the underseal so it's not visible on the exterior.

im talking a shite amount right on the edge, so a bodyshop wont be a factor. just needs a light rub and paint it, but dont want it to come back.

ah right, sorry mate! if its just surface stuff then paint and a good underseal should do it, like i said if you deny it water or oxygen it cant rust so paint will stop that gettin through!

i have the same problem and want to stop this before it gets too bad, is it possible to paint yourself?

im going to rub it back, use some rust stuff, then just paint it with a brush as its not very visable. got the right paint colour i'll just spray a brush, dont want to get overspray on the car as it might have to blend into the whole panel to get it right.

my arch is really really badly rusted, so shall be going into a bodyshop sometime before march so its all done for me passing my test.

this is what its like now:

pretty bad i think you'll agree :)

It coz me £90 mate, just waiting to see how long it lasts

Keiran that looks awful, when you're about to get it done it might be worth pulling back the boot carpet and checking the turret panel where the suspension mounts in the back, Nissans are well known for rotting here, havent heard of it being terminal on almeras yet as they're not quite old enough but ive seen it happening on afew. MOT testers check there first on sunnys/nx's when checking the panel work.

i'm sorry, i think she is terminal and need's operated on straight away to avoid further spread of infection

she shall be fixed for the meet in blackpool :)

its actually not as bad as it looks, its just surface bubbles, not rotted all the way through yet.
i'll have a look at that area tomorrow kelv, although i have had the wheel off and looked up into the arch and had the boot carpet out once, but wasnt looking in that area, didnt spot anything. shall have a thorough look tomorrow :)

I had a similar problem where the seam of the join between the body panels is folded over in the wheel arch collected water and silt and rusted through from the back. I took it to a body shop to get repaired and saw it half way through the work when the rust had been removed there was a hole about 5" long and 1" wide running 1/4 around the arch. It only looked like half a dozen bubbles under the paint.
Worth getting done properly if it's the same problem you don't want it to come back (a certain amount of the metal around the affected area needs to be removed to ensure the rust does not return).

How much did that cost you then?

They did a good job, looks perfect. They sealed the arches with plenty of bitumen and cleaned up some other bits for me at the same time so it wasnt as painfull handing over the 850 notes.
