battery advice

i know absolutely zero about car maintenance.

my 1.5 2002 almera failed to start this morning because the battery was flat. ( first time in the 3 years iv had it ,use daily )

my neighbour push started it for me and it was ok after that.

iv bought a RAC battery charger in case it happens again but dont fullyunderstand the instructions .

can someone tell me which option to turn the battery charger on to when charging is it

1. 6 volt trickle charge
2. 12 volt trickle charge
3. 12 volt fast charge

How long should i charge for the instructions does not specify a charge time.

the charger has a dial 0 to 8 AMPS / A

a green bulb

a red bulb (reverse connection ) ( besides it )

a white bulb (amber (6v/12v/ charging LED)
(green (12v fast charge complete LED )( besides it )

the dial also indicates 100 % to 0 % which im assuming tells me the powerin the battery.

thanks for any advice

1. 6 volt trickle charge - You havn't got a 6volt battery so no use to you!
2. 12 volt trickle charge - For a slow charge that you can leave plugged in overnight in the garage
3. 12 volt fast charge - The OMG I've got to go to work in an hour charge

How long should i charge for the instructions does not specify a charge time:
As long as you like on trickle, couple of hours at fast (ata guess), it should stop charging when full anyway (mine does)

the charger has a dial 0 to 8 AMPS / A
Never seen that on a charger before, lol- - I'd set it half and leave it!

a green bulb
Power?

a red bulb (reverse connection ) ( besides it )
For if you've connected the + and - the wrong way round

a white bulb (amber (6v/12v/ charging LED)
(green (12v fast charge complete LED )( besides it )
Just tells you about the 6v/12v slow/12v fast selection you made earlier

the dial also indicates 100 % to 0 % which im assuming tells me the powerin the battery.
Yes

thanks for any advice

is it a maintenance free battery ? if not dont worry just conect the clips to thier respective polarity and click it on fast charge make sure and remove the caps (if its not maintenance free, meaning you have to fill battery water in it) dont leave it for long all you need is enough current to start your car , the alternator wil do the rest , if the car starts leave it idling for about 20 min then switch off and start back leave somthing on for about 10 min if the battery runs down then its no good
a simple way to check for bad cell in your battery is to watch for bubbles like soda , if you see bubbles in the water then buy a new battery preferably an AC DELCO maintenance free battery with warranty
