big hello

just a quick hello to all, currently dont own an almera but after a rather bad accident in my old car i am now on the look out for a new car. have always liked the look of these cars and wondered about performance. im a real car nut and love my track days and trips to the nurburgring so you can imagine what im going to use the car for. just want to know some basic info about the gti's
,: whats performance like?
anything to look out for when buying one?
are parts easy enough/cheap enough to get hold of?
are they tuneable?
are they reliable (especialy on track events)?
im sure you get the gist, sorry for going on and back to the point of hello to all and hope to speak to you all, many thanx Rob

bonjour! welcome over.

long story short:

powwer - 143bhp standard
look for - rust on inner arches in the boot next to the seatbelt mounting points, apart from that do the usual second hand car checks
parts - search these forums or try 'SR20' on ebay
tuneable - very
reliable - corbs mrs gti is on circa 210k driven daily, so yeah!

fully adjustable coilover suspension is highly reccommended, SSAC manifold is huge bang for buck (ebay), add to that with a decat-back exhaust and a good filter, adjustable fuel reg and you'll have 160bhp on tap, doesnt sound much but its VERY useable in these cars. best investment if your going to be doing a lot of work yourself is the £16 membership to this place - goldmine

thanx for that, pretty much sum'd it up for me, have started looking at parts but would be good to get advice as to whats hot andd whats not, thanx for that tho, so i dont have to be too scared of cars for sale with 120k ish on the clock?

obviously the lower mileage you can find would be better, but - (and dont take this as gospel  ) mines at 135K+ miles and is cammed/filter/exhaust etc and still pulls like a steam train, so dont be too scared. despite sounding blatantly obvious, regular oil changes help these lumps last longer

welcome to the site dude, you'll love it here

they are easy as hell cars to work on as well once you get used to them. lol

my miss's (kez on here) never worked on a car in here life, yet since getting the almera she has done the big ends, front and rear discs pads shocks and springs mainly on her own. lol

thanx for all that guys, am feeling loads better about buying one now, its always daunting when buying a new car you know nothing about. have just about got my build planned out lol but wont spoil anything for anyone just yet lol. have still got another week or so off work so expect to see alot from me on here. are there any parts to stay away from, i remember from having my satria gti that there were certain parts that were just cheap crap but people werent to know unless youd had experiance with them first

Ebay universal coilovers, cheap lowering springs, goodridge braided brake lines (Get HEL ones), thats a few off the top of my head.

Welcome Rob - as a track car especially I'm sure you'll love a Gti ! Just look at Rowdy & Raceworx for example  Then there's Wezz, Curtis, etc who all do 1/4 miles or track days too.
