bodywork - guide?

Just wondering, Im trying to prep my skirts and stuff ready to be sprayed, I want to do as much work myself as possible (not spraying them) just wondering how much I should be sanding back of the original paint, Do i take all the paint off and leave it bare plastic or am I just taking the first layer or so off and prime over the top?

If anyone has any advice or better still, a guide to bodywork repairs etc that would be awesome.
 
Actually ive looked through all 7 pages and what ive found doesnt really help me at all :/ Do you know if I should be sanding it all RIGHT back or just getting the surface cleaned/smoothed?
 
Just taking it back past the gloss should be fine, are you painting it the same coulor, if not what coulor is it now/going to be?
 
I've not sprayed bodywork, but when I respray things I just take the gloss finish off, and make the surface rough enough for the primer to stick well.
Might be worth lightly sanding the primer too.
