Bonnet Strut : A How To

Wee present for hopelessness :)

right, so, bearing in mind that my one still needs to be tidied up and finished, heres a rough how to on transferring a boot strut to the bonnet.

First : The outcome

Heres what you start with, a strut, with both ends on.

What you need to do next is remove this end by drilling out the pin holding it on, i filled the hole left with chemical metal and drilled it out to the size i needed for the bolt i was using.

Now measure it up against the bonnet, for places to fit i used the top outside corner of the bonnet hinge and the middle bolt holding the top of the wing on (you may need to find a longer bolt for this, i found one off my blue almera in the engine bay somewhere)

next you need to drill a hole into the bonnet hinge, roughly in this position, i used a 6mm bit, but obviously it'll depend on the side of bolt you're using for it.

and now its time to bolt it all together, make sure you use the second hole on the strut

As i said, mine is a rough version, and i'll be taking it all off to make it look a bit nicer soon, but its working great and ive had no problems with it :) so im happy.

any wauy of making the bonnet stop at more of a origonal position angle,

seems like your cars got an erection buddy ;)

if you use 2 maybe and put them a bit further down/forwards on the wings?

how bigs your head dude ;)

when you open it does in automatically open it to that point or can you pull it down a bit?

dont get me wrong it looks good and youve done a good job, just that id prefer a lower angle :D

can pull it down to about 3/4s of the way up...if that makes sense, thats where it holds itself, but at that its too low

when you say 3/4's of the way up from where you have it now, thats about normal level yeah?

and at that point it wont fall down due to the weight?

i used struts off a micra and it works willl get some pics up tomo mine sits the same but will stay 3 quarters of the way up does go up a bit quick on the last half tho lol

used almera boot struts on the bonnet of my sunny, best mod ever, no worries about it crashing on your head if you knock the bonnet stay, also they hold it open at about a 1/4, anymore and it opens itself, awesome!

well thats just where it starts to hold itself, you will be able to get it to sit between there and where ive got it full openened by mounting the bottom of the strut further down the wing towards the front of the car.

But that would involve drilling holes in the top of the wing.

i have done this mod to every car ive owned in the 6 years ive been driving, i just cant be having with that bloody bonnet rod in my way when im working, and i think it looks a lot better too. the best part is ive used the same pair of struts on all cars! there starting to go a little rusty now though, but 6 years and 7 cars aint that bad lol! its such an easy mod to do aswell, it takes about 15 minutes if youve got all your tools to hand ( a drill and a socket set lol ) one thing i would deffinately say is to make sure you get rid of ALL the drill swarf from the area you drilled, any filings left on the metal work of the car will rust very badly!! as i found out on an astra bellmont (ive still got the alloys off that car if anyones interested?) all those years ago lol
