Brake Caliper advice pls

Morning......to bloody early but morning. Was over joyed to find the GTI's front calipers (both) binding yesterday on way home. I have a 150mile trip home this afternoon on a likely snowy road so Im really looking forward to this. My question, the rear calipers piston screw's back in. Is this the same scenario with the front ones or can I simply force the calipers straight open? I have a few tools with me that will allow for forcing them open whilst still fitted? Is that do-able?
Thanks
Jack

Fronts just push back mate bit of elbow grease you'll be fine, but if they're binding.....the seals are probably screwed and the pistons can't return far enough

....phone....

It's more likely the pins are seized yeah, once they're out which might take a while , they will prob need a light rub down with sandpaper to remove any corrosion , grease them up and slide them back home.

Use a G clamp for ease of pushing the pistons back but before u do use a bit of either mintex ceratech or cooper grease then push back this may do the trick depending on state of calipers, hope this helps bud

Copper grease on what?
Loosening the bleed nipple can make it much easier pushing the piston back in.

Yh that to would work but messy bud, lil bit of copper grease around the edge of the cylinder, if its a bit corroded lightly sand then apply grease trust me it works I've done it

Not with some tubing into a bottle. To get to the caliper piston you'd have to remove or peel back the dust seal, no doubt splitting it.

If the piston is seized i would replace the complete caliper. No point fucking around. It's lasted 15 years or so. New calipers and a new master cylinder on these cars and i think you would have good braking once again.

Thanks guys.
I just want to make it home tonight and will fidlle with it tomorrow.... If it has a dust cover, that is good news. I have found they do help A LOT in keeping grit and crap off. I also suspect that when I bought the car, I had to replace the pads to pass the mot...in a hurry. The pads fitted were stupidly cheap ones...= MASSIVE dust build up. I really think that has contributed. I used to use Ferodo pads and got average 20k miles on a front set with very little dust and very good bind, recon its time again. Thanks again guys...

give the car and wheels a good old wash to remove the dust build up, the bleed nipples are always bloody seized lol but yeah for the year of the car maybe new ones would be the way forward but until then a quick and cheap refurb would suffice
