Brake Caliper handbrake issue

im not sure if anyone can shed any light on this. 2004 nissan almera failed mot, brakes imbalanced across an axle and service brake and handbrake not responsive enough ( not exact wording..)
Guy working on car ( mechanic friend) tried all sorts before concluding that needed new rear offside brake caliper.
He fitted it, service brake immediately better. However, handbrake cable remained loose and he wasn't sure how best to adjust it. He tried adjusting it himself, before realising and learning that it should ratchet back in to caliper itself if he pumped on foot brake.
He tried this yesterday, but it was doing nothing.
He concluded that the brake caliper we'd got ( not nissan, a reconditioned one that fits car) was a fail. So we've got another to try later today
Is it def right that he simply needs to pump foot brake and it should ratchet back in? Is he missing something?
He's not worked on an Almera before
Any advice would be v gratefully received

It could also be knackered/frayed/rusty cables and not the calipers at all,
you or your mechanic should probably strip the parts out and check for damage/wear and replace/service as required.
You really shouldn`t mess with brakes if you don`t know what you are doing (when i said "you" i mean you or your mechanic, who doesn`t know Almera`s,if i were you,i would find a mechanic who does know what he/she is doing.
Be safe.
Good luck.
