BRAKE DISCS

just wondering if anyone can offer advice!
ihave owned my gti for 4 years, am on my second set of TMS brake discs.
i do not brake excessively but the discs have warped again, cheap rubbish i think.

can anyone reccomend any discs that will stand the test of time a bit better,
have been looking at possibly getting Mintex discs and pads,
am not gonna go as far as Brembo as it is jus a standard clean example, not a racing machine!!

all advice welcome, thanx

delphi (ithink)

i have had them on my mothers car now for well over 2 years.. still perform great.. with limited wearmarks..

and she dont drive slow!

you pay for what you get, mintex is what i fit when replacing standard parts (like for like)

Is the problem more that you sit in traffic queues with your foot on the brake pedal? Heat spots are probably a bigger factor in warping discs than how cheap they are - handbrake ftw...

^Yup. There was a member on here who kept warping his discs, turned out he was ragging the car everywhere then just sat with his foot on the brake.

You haven't warped the disc, what you have done is stick the pad to the disc and left a ridge. Check it on a DTI and you'll see, sometimes you can even see the ridges and feel them.

I've only had this problem when using EBC discs and Green pads, I think it's to do with the coating they put on the disc as never had it on any other disc. In factI used unipart cheapys with the same pad that killed the EBC and it never fauletred even during rally use.

Best thingyou can do to bed your brakes in is brake fairly hard from high speed down to around 5mph then repeat, don'tcome to a halt on the new brakes, use teh handbrak, and dont sit with your foot on the brake pedal, especially after spirited driving. This is where the problem starts.

As for brake discs, There's a seller on ebay selling Drilled and grooved for £55 and a tenner postage, these are what I've been running on my last few cars and have never had a problem.

i know i dont sit with my foot on the brake but am forever tellin my other half off for doing that.
i can understand the logic behind this and will tell her again!!

as for the the ridge on the disc, i will keep my old ones and clock them up on the lathe at work.

wasnt sure about the drilled and grooved discs on the bay as it doesnt specify what type discs they are,
tho hearing that you rate them makes me wish i had waited before ordering the mintex!!

Yeah i`ve heard you can`t physically warp discs it`s to do with how the pad coats the discs or something. I use delphi ( supplied by buypartsbuy ) with no probelms even after 3 mainly track yrs.

As for the brakes i know the feeling.
I have a really extreme drivingstyle with consumes brakepads as dinner.
The discs are tarox grooved ones, really expensive tho (560€ for 2 discs). The original brakediscs of the almera gti i eat in 10 000mile, they gor "bend" and blue/black coloured, ea time i stopt they had a red glow on it.
The tarox don't have it yet :D and i'm driving with them for almost 20 000mile. My brakepads are ebc red stuff, but their worn off after 6200 mile :D, matter of drivingstyle i assume ;)

picking up on an old thread here.... my GTi's back brake pads don't appear to wearing down on all the surface of the discs? Only the centre 2 centimetre's. Is this a case of warped discs or worn pads? I have my MOT coming up soon and would rather get it sorted beforehand so I can upgrade to drilled or grooved discs instead of the cheapy crap they overcharge massively for.

I'll try n put up some pics
