Brake overhaul needed - advice on refurbing calipers please!

Hi all,

Enjoying owning my Almera a great deal but think there is a problem with the brakes. I have a feeling a caliper has siezed up but not 100% sure. The symptoms are as follows:

When driving along at 30mph and taking my foot off the accelerator, the car seems to start slowing down quite quickly (more so than normal engine braking when in gear) and sort of judders as its slowing down, but is smooth enough when using the throttle. I notice it more at lower speeds when coming off the accelerator it feels very juddery.

Does this sound like a siezed caliper to you? Anything else it could be?

I have been looking on brakes international website for caliper refurb kits and have found a caliper service kit for £20 or a caliper seal kit for £8 - would I only need the seal kit or is it worth doing the whole lot as I take it the service kit comes with everything including the main seal.

Anyone bought these before? This will be the first time I will have re-furbished calipers but seems fairly straightforward to me.

Any tips or advice is much appreciated!

Cheers all
Russ

Jack up both wheels, give them a spin, see if ones less free than the other, compare pad wear. If your not satidfied then, undo the (probably seized as fuck) caliper bolts and remove the caliper from the disk and see if you can get the piston to go back in using some big grips.

If is very reluctant to go back but does eventually, get some wd40 under the seal, push the caliper out slowly using the brake pedal, then push it back in. Repeat that a few times and it might cure it.

Thanks Simcard - I shall try that first on the weekend.

rowdy-GTi - if it is a siezed slide pin, is it just a case of greasing with copper grease and should cure it?

Cheers

Sand it down a bit so its smooth again and try and use some high temp grease, copper will do but its not the best stuff for slider pins. These do tend to seize on Almera's so its a possiblity, you might as well renew the pads if they're halfway down, your into the job so to speak.

Thanks very much.

Hoping to get this sorted on the weekend, give it a clean and get some pics up on here.

Thanks again
Russ :)
