Brakes Juddering?

Not long had the Almera N16, and i'm not sure if this is supposed to happen. When i brake, whether it's lightly or hard, the brake pedal would just vibrate stupidly. Is this the ABS kicking in for some reason? If it's got ABS that is. Just seems the brakes are crap.

Cheers guys..

Pads could be low enough that they over heat, boiling the brake fluid causing the sensation in the pedal that you describe. As above, it could also be warped discs and also a sticky or seized caliper piston. Drive normally for 2 or 3 miles without using the brakes to much. Then, when you have parked up, check the temperature of each of the front wheels. If one is noticeably hotter than the other, you have a sticky or seized caliper. You can also find this out by just getting the car rolling, dip the clutch and don't touch the brakes. If a caliper is 'grabbing' you will feel it.

Either way, you really need to whip the front wheel off and have a look.

@ alex, i get this in mine sometimes, its the abs, tends to happen more at low speed than high, also when turning.

@ torquesteerman, the front calipers are far less likey to seize, the rear caliers on the N16s are very common for sticking.

Hope this helps :)

It was my front callipers that gave me hassle on mine, rear handbrake mechanism seized about a year ago too though on both sides but was an easy fix and has never been a problem since, I'd go with it being the discs but i'd try the "wheel feeling" suggestion first to make sure you haven't got a sticking brake as you may just end up warping a new disc. And it takes really heavy braking for my ABS to do its stuff.
