Broke down advice needed

My 2003 1.5 S broke down yesterday.

Went to it after an 11 mile journey and nothing.

All lights on dash lit up but turned key and nowt.

Then after 4 or 5 attempts starter motor turned but didn't fire.

After 2 hours including taking the battery off to see if it reset the ECU I got the bus home

45 quid later for reciovery, It is now at an Auto Electrician who couldn't find fault, it started every time.

I had this same fault a week ago but it started, I replaced the battery in the Key fob thinking it was flat.

The Auto Electricain said it may need a main dealer if the NATS sytem is at fault.

Is there any alternatve to that?

Live in North-East Newcastle area

Firstly, the battery in the fob has nothing to do with the starting of the car. It controls the remote central locking only. The immobilizer is powered by an induction loop in the ignition switch and is totally self powered!!
Two possibilities for intermittant starting of your car.
1. Battery is old and not holding a good enough charge to jump the starter motor into life. Lights on panel will light as normal as they require less power to operate.
2. Starter motor is on it's way out.

Or it could be a combo of both of these.
The reason i reckon it could be this is that it happened to my 2003 Almera a few years back and it needed a new starter motor. Luckily replaced under warranty... just.
Good luck with your findings

an auto elec would of spotted the above

check if the cam and crank sensors have been replaced under the recall,

does a stretched chain cause running problems on the N16?

providing ur auto elecy has done the basic checks , check the wiring loom on the passenger side where it bends around the raditor ( from the battery down and along the bottom of the radiator ) where it bends directly on the passenger side of the radiator the wires streach and break , they also suffer from water ingress in the loom in that area causes all sorts of problems one of which is non-start

IMPORTANT ! : when checking the wires by the radiator , when you strip the protective cover back to inspect the loom it may on first inspection look good , BUT the insulation on the wires streaches and the copper strands inside break , have a good close look and check this out irs a very comon fault on N16 Model , i was a technician for nissan and sore this compaint on many occations

Hope this helps regards Dan

one more thought they suffer badly with the main earth lead from the battery to the gearbox failing , easy to check use a set on jump leads and just run one lead from the battery to a clean metal part of the engine

Thanks for this, car back from Ato Elecy and they found nothing wrong with it.

They did a Diagnostic and three faults came up to do with NATS.

P1610 NATS Malfunction
P1614 NATS Malfunction
P1615 NATS Malfunction

Anyone any idea what these mean?

What you need to do is get them to reset the OBDII Codes. They might be old codes stored after the problems you've aready had. Then try staring your car again. Get the OBDII Codes checked again to see if they persist.
Check if the security light on the instrument panel is permanently lit. If you get the codes again and/or the light is lit then i think it may be something related to the NATS module and related circuits, but don't quote me.
Just out of interest, have you tried your spare key to check if it might be a key transponder problem?

Has my Post Been Read And Checked , & One of my posts has been removed, it frustrates me that i have offered good inside knoweldge , i myself have worked for nissan and am fully nissan trained

Whats the point in asking for advise , then not listening to what people say, the nats system in the car is very good , i have seen very few go wrong , BUt have seen very many N16s with this complaint have faulty wiring by the radiator as stated in my previous post

Sorry d2almera, will let you get on with helping out. Can i be cheeky and ask you if you know where i could buy new lower control arms for a 2003 DCi without paying dealer prices.
Thanks, will keep your name in mind as might need to tap into your knowledge from time to time ;)

You've actually helped me a lot d2almera, as motor factors isn't a term i've come across when searching for parts for vehicles.
Googled the words, and kerching, loads of websites with companies dealing in exactly what i want. Cheers.

Got the car back Saturday morning was at work all Sat afternoon, late evening, wife at work all day yesterday, so not had a chance to check wiring.

This morning wife went to the car and again same problem nothing but NATS light flashing on dash.

Will have a look at wiring after taken kids to school.

Have tried both Keys same fault.

OBDII Codes. are these the 3 codes I have listed? Other than that Auto Elecy started it without a problem 20+ times so only charged me for the Diagnostics.

Battery is original from 2003. Will test it

Thanks for your help

Sounds similar to a problem i had with my P11 GT.

Was a faulty battery connector in the end, but nothing worked in the car, the dash didnt light up, didnt lock etc etc.

Broke down

The car went to a main dealer last week.

Problem was with bolts on the ignition barrel.

One had snapped, causing the ignition not to make contact properley, don't know how this has happened whether someones attempted to steal it or just a faulty bolt.

If it goes again a new Immobilzer and loom will be needed for the NATS.

Thanks for your help

Lee

Glad you got it sorted in the end. Sometimes it's the most obscure problems that cause the greatest deal of time wastage. Thanks for keeping the post up to date, as it will help others in the future.
