Car stalls when im driving!!!

For a while now Ive noticed while I'm in gear and the car is reving mid to higher rpm, as soon as i put my foot on the clutch the revs drop and drop below the mark in between 1000 and 0 and then rise again and then idles at around 600rpm. This didn't bother me much but last week while i was driving and put my foot on the clutch to coast to the traffic lights the engine stalled. I only noticed because the steering felt heavy and then i noticed all the dashboard lights on. I turned the key and the engine started instantly so that was good. Its happened to me 3 times this week :( Anyone know what might be going on?
Also when i pump the break pedal about 5 or more times the revs become really erratic and the engine feels like its going to stall. Is that related to the problem above or does that happen to other cars?

cant help with the stalling but mine does the brake thing, sitting there a pumping the brake fast the revs drop to 450 lol

mine has had problems with it being juddery under acceleration and seeming to loose power, nissan dealer told me this would be the throttle body as soon as i mentioned it but when they checked it over they couldnt find a problem. looking on ebay at micras they seem to have problems with the throttle body aswell, im wondering if the butterfly sticks or something like that or possibly one of the sensors on the throttle body fails, whatever it is seems like a fairly common fault yet no one seems to no for certain what it is. im going to get a complete throttle body hopefully with all the sensors if i find one in a breakers cheap, should just let me change everything over and find what the problem actually was, will let you know what i find if yours isnt fixed by then

Have you got a K&N induction kit on the car? If you have the feed pipe too close, ie closer than K&N say, then the car will stall alot for some reason, more so during colder weather, and the symptoms are exactly what you mentioned. Mine used to stall coming up to junctions.

First the brake thing is not a problem. When you pump the brakes like that you use the vacuum in the servo up, so it takes some from the inlet manifold which acts like a vacuum leak if you keep doing it.

The stalling problem: I need to look at mine too as my revs are dropping/hunting when I slow down and dip the clutch. My usual method when it does this is to clean the TB and AAC then check/adjust the base idle and timing.

my car has stalled once before. as i came up to traffic lights i put the clutch in earlier than normal to check something and then braked fairly hard. when i put my clutch in revs drop down to about 300rpm and then go back up again and i think braking fairly hard as the revs dropped really low was what killed it off cos the brakes put a little bit more strain on the engine. its nothing to worry about just dont put the clutch in so early lol

I had the problem of the revs hunting when pulling up to junctions and dipping the clutch, turned out to be the idle control valve was knackered.
fitted second hand one in fifeteen minutes costing £50.

The revs shouldn't drop that low so don't go thinking it's normal ;)

i hasd the same problem but i got away with adjusting the idle control valve :)

Slick Rick i have exactly same problem. had few near close calls with cars behind me. pity is like already been said it's a common problem but no sure cause yet for it to be fixed. if you get it fixed post up the details. thanks

Ok peeps after a year of this happening to me I seem to have found a solution, after my tyre was punctured took to to my mechanic mate and told him about it and he said leave it with me, went back in the afternoon and seems to be fixed and i've driven 30-40miles and hasn't happened but all he did was....clean it!!!

yeah pretty much, he sprayed some kind of cleaner that his garage had and let it run for 5mins, takes minutes to do!

I had a problem with erratic revs on my old car with it stalling when dippin the clutch, idleing at 500rpm and wanting to cut out. It turned out to be worn throttlebody and potenciometer(sp). Mainly the potenciometer but i could only replace the whole lot as they werent sold seperatly. Costly :(

cant check it coz im not a full member :(

Anyway i asked around on another site, the guy there workds on GA16DE and SR20DE's and he said my MAF sensor was dirty. Its in that hole, it looks like a resistor. Anyway, its kept at a constant 200 degrees and works out the amount of air entering the engine by the air travelling through and cooling it. Over time small pollen particles, oil from some filters etc.. get through the air filter and then burn and stick on the sensor which throws the measurements off. I was gonna spray it with electrical cleaner but ive heard their really sensitive and its about £100-150 to replace so i decided to leave it.
If the problem gets worse ill go to Nissan.
Heres a nice picy:

So this is a common problem with Almera's??

Slick Rick, your car stalling while driving it shouldn't have anything to do with the MAF. I had a mate poke that MAF wire and the results were bad, basically the car prob took a good minute to accelerate to 50mph+ wouldn't go over 3000revs or over 50-60mph and sound's horrible, so whatever you do DO NOT TOUCH IT or spray anything on it cause it's a very fine wire. I had to get Nissan to fix it and can't remember the exact figure (if you want i'll dig the invoice out) but cost someting like £300 to get part and labour. I bought one from the scrappy which didn't work because they have to be set up for your car. The MAF shouldn't get dirty anyway I wouldn't think unless you take filter off!?

The stalling is a common problem with Almera's and people from the site have found different thing's work but main one (and the one that worked for me) it's just cleaning the idle valve control.

Hope this helps and good photo!

soz to bring this old thread up again but after nearly a month of plain sailing the problems back. On my way home today, a 15 mile journey the car stalled 4 times!! :mad:No problem starting it up again as usuall. Had a passenger with me too, quite embarrassing coz it looks like i cant drive my car or my cars a dump and doesnt work, neither of which are true of course:P

Could someone tell me where the idle valve control is and how to clean it(preferably with pics)

Thanks!

Also because the engines idling so low the revs are really slow to build right at the start. Feels like a turbocharged car with massive turbo lag.....but it isnt a turbo:roll: lol

from what i can rember when my boyfriend did it is on the left hand side under a black cover near the back. i cant remeber exactly il get dave to post later to explain, are you sure its not just became a bit stuck coz thats what ours did, all dave did was turn it up and then down to where it was and it worked, i think. like i said ill get dave to post later, if no one else has, where exactly it is!
