Cat C and Gear changing noises... help

Hi guys,

I need some help and advice please!!!!

I went to see a racing green (didnt know that colour existed) Gti today in Gants Hill in east london
i'ts a 98 R with 70k on the clock.
regular service history, some nissan stamped.
has a full p2 body kit, 5 inch exhaust and a piper cross air filter.

ok there are 2 problems....

1) it is registered as an accident repaired cat c... there was only front panel damage but this has been repaired.. however there are a few signs of it if you check under the bonnet.

2) Whilst driving i noticed that every time I changed into the second gear it made that crunchy noise (sounds like, when you try to change the gear without fully pressing down on the clutch). This only happens when going from first to second and from third to second. The clutch doesnt slip though.. The biting point is slightly high but not bad.

So my questions are

1) re-sale value and would anyone trust a cat c gti?

2) Whats wrong with the clutch
is it the gear box? someone mentioned the clutch plate... but this is all chinese to me.

I've got the guy down to 1k... he won't budge anymore :(

sorry for the long essay...

Any advice will be appreciated.

cheers

accident damage is down to the person, alot of people wont touch an accident damaged car, personally i dont see any problem with them ASLONG as its fixed properly, a bodged up car isnt worth touching but one thats been fixed properly is no different to a non accident damaged car in my eyes although different people think differently. in terms of resale value it probably wont be that much different as there very cheap anyway, newer cars loose alot of money but with them already being very cheap it probably wont make a huge difference to resale value although it may put off some potential buyers who are scared of any previous damage etc. in a few years time almeras will be at bargain basement prices so there wont be much room for further price drops if that makes sense, ie there already so cheap theres no room for accident damage to knock of any noticeable amount of money.

most cars have had some sort of damage anyway, my almera has done, the p10 has done aswell, didnt stop us from buying either as they were fixed to a high standard and the cars have no lasting effects as a result of it, they drive like any other one would do, look like any other one would do etc. it may put off some people but then again it may get you a bargain so its up to you. you would be suprised how many cars have done, i know quite a few people that have bought cars and genuinely beleived they have never been crashed etc but when you look closer the signs are there. think people with knowledge on cars are less scared than your average bloke in the street who has read in a magazine accident damage is terrible run a mile etc.

go with what your head says, could get a bargain, could be a pain to sell on when you come to sell, depends on how you look at it

theres loads ov threads on here about crunchy and noisey gear boxes/clutches i wouldnt worry about it most people seem to have the same problem! problem meaning it must be normal!! hard to get into first/reverse or 1st 2nd 3rd etc etc, as for the cat c its up to you i wouldnt be botherd if it looks ok, look for rust , rust and more rust!

Get the clutch cable adjusted, (could be all it needs).

As for accident damaged cars, we had an ex-demonstrator Fiesta some years ago, bought it when it was 5 months old, when we took it for its 1st MOT, we found out it had had a heavy knock on the passenger side front corner, so had a new wing & some filler put in the panel underneath it!

But, that car saw us through 19 years, almost 300k miles on the original engine (which was still like new when I had the head off & de-coked it @ 200k), 2 gearboxes (after a drive shaft bearing snapped & blew the side out of the casing), we only got rid of it when Dad became disabled & got his 1st Motability car.

My N16 has also had a front-end impact @ somepoint before I got it, (ex rental car) that no-one told me about, but seems to be fine.

Sorry for the long post, but as others have said, as long as it`s been fixed properly it shouldn`t give any problems.

thanks a lot guys.
The damage was only to the panel and has been repaired.. My only worrys are that if a car takes such a big impact surely it would weaken the rest of the car including the chasis. As for the gear crunching... I've read a lot of threads on the matter and It doesnt sound something too bad.

As for buying the car, I am still a little sceptical.

my almera is a cat c, 2 rear quaters, rear axle, front right suspension set up, left hand front wing, and a few other things have been done on mine

cat c are worth less and are harder to re-sell, if there is two almera's for sale one for £1000 and one for £1400 i would rather spend £400 extra put it that way, why buy an accident damage car when you don't have to, if you are sceptical now someone will be when you come to sell it and you will be knocked down on your re-sale price

Gearbox sounds like the synchromesh between second and third is worn, this used happen on my CRX going into third. What happens is the gearbox isn't able to match the speed of second gear to the speed of the gear your in, hence the gears grinding! Would mean a rebuild to fix it though!! New gearbox oil may help the problem as the gearbox oil in the car is probably there since day one and lost it's effectiveness!
