400-500 quid for the timing chain and tensioners to get done ffs how can nissan justify the price for an almera £160 for the chain when a micra is about £40 odd quid and it dont work out if ite double the size do they ride about on a horse call black bess its highway robery

How knackered is it? As far as i was aware the chain lasts the life of the enginge? Nearly 100k on mine and no problems so far?

48000 miles and its a common fault nissan blame extended oil changes so keep your regular

I was gonna put a post saying the chain is no way a common fault but noticed you have an N16. Never heard of it being a common fault, and "extended" oil changes? It should be changed once a year at least, if Nissan state longer then that, ignore them.

4-500 quid sounds about right to be honest with all the labour involved as it's an engine out job. That's with main dealer prices anyway.

it would be very hard to change the timing chain with the engine still in. Granted there is a bit more room on the N16's as opposed to the N15 SR20, but it would still require alot of labour and be very fiddly to do.

From the looks of that link, it smells like Nissan aint gonna stump up the cost unfortuatly. One for Tech1 methinks, he'll know whats happeneing.

after readin that on the link I can see why sometimes it is better to have a cam belt rather than a chain.

only seems a problem on the N16. N15`s and other `older` nissan seem fine.

Tech1uk......why all the cam chain problems? why use a chain when it doesn`t last as long as a cheap to replace rubber belt?....

the chains are a comon fault on the N16's and the P12's aswell, must have something to do with renaults lol

I have done almost 70,000 miles since i bought my n16 almost 3 year ago and i have never had any problems with the timing chain. The car had 33,000 miles on it when i bought the car and it's now up to 101,000 miles.

Rite then :)

It is to do with the oil that attacks the metal content in the chain.
As the Oil gets older and used it makes a acid which in turn attacks part of the chain which in turns make the chain stretch.. We are only talking mm's here but it is enough to turn the engine light on. The cam and crank sensors detect where the engine is and if that is out of spec it will fault.
Also you may find you get a lumpy idle, this is the ECM trying to correct the problem. If you disconnect the crank sensor when the engine is running you will notice it will idle ok for a bit.

The chain can be changed with the engine in there and will take about 4-5 hours to do. ( I can do them in 3 but there again I'm shit hot  )

So £400 for the job is good and the rest of you with N16's change you oil on time and use the recommend Nissan Oil.

pity u dont live up north could have got u to do it lol  hope mines ok when i get it back oh by the way nicely worded tech

why are the newer engines more prone to this?.....longer service intervals?

I think it is more to do with emissons and EOBD standards. The metal and oil quality. So many things you can't use now days.

got chain and tensioners done £405 runs sweet again still bit pissed wiv the cost of it all
