The clutch has begun to slip in my 1999 phase 2 GTi. :(

How much is this likely to cost to fix? Any tips?

basically its a new clutch, you could try and adjust the clutch cable if the it seems very 'heavy' otherwise its a new clutch, do a search on the forums and you'll find a few quotes for clutchs

Get a clutch from your local cheap parts place (there's one in every town) cost me £50 from mine, then attempt it yourself (depending on your competancy with cars) or take it to a garage, around here its in the region of £80-£100 to fit.

Check the cable isn't adjusted too tightly. There should be some slack in it, as it wears you need to adjust it to keep the slack in there, if not it will slip even when it's fine.

i had mine adjusted it lasted 3 more month's! it was slipping and really heavy! still wasent slipping before i got it done but found some money so got it done its much better pulls alot harder! cost £200! but make sure they put the right gear box oil back in because they didnt on mine and i couldnt get my gears!!!

Thank's all. My local garage told me there was no adjustment and it would cost £300 for a new one fitted....so thanks for the advice

i paid £50 for a brand new clutch but that was for a 1.4 so not sure if it will be much different for the GTi.

fitting cost me £125 and I had the flywheel skimmed too!

Clutch: £60 (ebay)
Fitting: £90
Being able to drive my GTi how it deserves: Priceless
