Coilover help

theres been a 'knocking' coming from the back left coilover/suspension since i got the car, but it seems to have gotten alot worse..
a few people have told me that it could be the top mounts that have given way..
was talking to a lad tonight and he mentioned that you can put 'poly' mounts in instead of the top mounts? is he right? or was he talking sh*t?
also does any one have any idea what noise it is if its not the top mounts?
and also what do the top mounts do?!
any help would be appriceiated..
thanks in advance

Poly mounts?....he`s talking shite.

Just check all the top mounts nuts/bolts are tight as well as the lower through bolt, then have a look if the lower coller on the damper has come lose ( the threaded part that can move up or down ) maybe its moved so much the spring isn`t always under tension and is moving about.

If it not you`ll have to take the unit out and have a look at it. ( its only held on with 3 nuts ).

checked the top mount bolts (pain in the ass :( ) and they seem tight, is the 'lower through bolt' located at the top mount aswell? if so, i've checked that and it seems fine, the lower collor on the damper seems ok, spring seems to be under tension..
whats the worst case scenario that it could be? a refurb of the coilover?

The through bolt is where the bottom of the damper joins the beam axle. They`ll aslo be a few rubber sections in the top mount, maybe one of these is split?

Worse case the damper may be knackered/leaking, this can happen especially when the car is slammed!....but yours doesn`t look 2 low.

best bet is to get it off and have a look.

i was thinking it was going to be these rubber sections, mechanic mentioned it to me first when i got the car, is there a way to change/replace these? i take it that if you take it out, you'll be able to know if these rubber sections are gone?
dont think the damper is leaking, i check them now and again and it seems fine..
