Colour Coded Mirrors

Heys

I'm at work and bored, so just thinking of things I could do to the ol' mera without spending too much.

Anyhoo, i'm wanting to spray the wing mirrors red, and was just wondering whether the outer casing comes off, or whether i'll need to take the whole unit off and use masking tape etc.

I tried to get the plastic casing off my wing mirror and the only way I could do it was to take the whole thing apart and try and pop the clips out. Two of the clips were already broken as it was a factory reject, but it was still virtually impossible to get off!

I ended up spraying mine in the end as I couldn't be arsed messing on with the new wing mirror.

I took my inside door card off, ripped off that black triangle cover above the door card (the clips broke) undone the 3 screws holding on the mirror and then unclipped the electrics. (When putting the thing back together I used super glue for the black triangle)

Sanded down the mirror, Primed it twice(light sanding in between), two/three coats of tropical green paint and finally two light coats of halfrauds clear lacquer.

Tada, you have a colour coded mirror :)

Heres a pic of my car. I did the mirrors, door handles and bumpstrips. If you find your mirrors easy to do mabye you could do the rest too...

Aye I have the paint and laquer and everything because I've sprayed other things, just wondering how hard its gonna be to get the mirrors off

Where did you get the tropical green paint? the halfrauds by me don't do it in a made up tin, it has to be specially made, which cost a small fortune :(

I went to a paint shop and gave them our paint code(JT3) and they mixed it within 10mins. £10 got me one 400ml can, I used about 1 and 1/4 cans of paint on all that.
Its better getting two or three cans at once so the colour is consistent because its mixed in one batch.

When I did my door handles I didnt take them off, I just masked around them. I would recommend taking them off though if you want to do a really nice job.

the door handles are really easy to get off, but you need a 10mm socket with a extension bar to make it so. if you have a haynes maual this helps too. just a case of taking the door card off. and removing the window guide (for the front handles) to make it easy to gain access into the nut. Hope this helps

Dad was like "naaaah, don't take it off, just tape loadsa newspaper on the side of the car..." big mistake! lmao

Other than that, the painting part of it all is quite easy, but i've done quite a lot of spraying on other things. Worst part was that it started to p*ss it down just after i'd finished the final base coat.... so had to go home and laquer it about 3 days later.
