Ok phoned ALS in Exeter who are pretty good for Jap stuff.

Rear damper each £67 + VAT

Phoned JFE Nissan in Exeter: £51.36 + VAT each.

I hope theyve got the right bit, the chap didn't seem to understand the word "damper", "oh you mean the shock absorber?" err yes...

Could this be true?? A main dealer cheaper than an aftermarket place?!

Edumacate him :D Tell the guy that it's the spring that absorbs the shock, not the damper.

Well the damper body controls the descent/ascent of the car so it too absorbs the shock...

Anyhoo, went into ALS, told them Nissan were cheaper and they price beat Nissam :D

So 2 KYB (Nissan OEM spec) dampers for £47 + VAT each, bargain! :)

makes you wonder why they were going to charge you 67 quid in the first place though!

KYB shocks are used on a 1/4 of ALL new cars from the factorys (Nissan, BMW to name just two) they are the biggest independant seller of shock's in the country, so they should be good parts for you :)

:tut: the spring absorbs the shock. the damper dampens the motion of the spring.

Also I asked - "What is it trade?" at JFE and the fanny then gave me trade lol - I have nothing to do with the motor buisness, SCORE!

Err, the spring copes with the weight of the car whilst the unsprung weight of the car (wheel, rear beam, bottom half of damper) tracks over a bump or into a hole. The damper absorbs the "shock" of the impact if you like and controls the motion of the car, if it didn't then the car would bounce around like noone's business. The damper controls the motion of the sprung mass, ie the body and rest of the car, compared to the effect the spring is trying to exert on the car as the wheel tracks over bumps/ruts.

I swapped over the new ones last night and the drivers side one was fine but the passenger side one was proper screwed! Literally no fluid left in it at all and the push rod was wobbling around freely  Can't believe it got so bad so quickly! A much happier car now and it's solved the slightly vague feeling from the back end (so to speak).
