im after a new set of dampers and suspension front and back. is this the same as coilovers?
any suggestions?
cheers

Not really sure what you mean?....depends what you`re after. Just lowering can be got by fitting lowering springs ( upto -40mm ) if you want lower and adjustable dampers you need coilovers, but these come in at over £600 on average.

Er well your suspention comprises of dampners/shocks and springs.

You can get lowering (usually -40mm) springs or standard
You can get slightly shorter and stiffer shocks or standard

coilovers are an all in one unit that has (depending on spec) height adjustment, dampner adjustment, camber adjustment etc.

It all depends on what your after and the size of your budget

well basically my front left clonks over pot holes etc, n is stiff which upsets the back end of my car a low speeds whilst turning. so im looking for new sports dampers (i think) and sports ones. basically if i get a new set of coilovers and springs then ill get all i need to do the job??
cheers.

You do, but for a lot of money when you could just dodge the pot hole :P

coilovers will make the ride a lot stiffer too, im not sure if that's what you want though from your description?

Hmm, thinking of lowering the car too. Coilovers prob too expensive but don't want to compromise handling.

Will springs reduce the handling (as there'll be less travel and the shocks will effectively be compressed) or improve it? I'm not wanting to shake my teeth out so ideally would like something close to the original set up in terms of firmness.

Maybe the compromise in terms of cost v handling is shocks + springs? Around £300?

Also any recommendations re which ones? Eilbachs, Spax etc

The springs will look good and make the car handle a bit better, get a good set of Eibachs, IIRC about 40mm should be good. The cars not gona feel like its floating, more like you'll probably be able to feel every stone in the road, get some decent shocks. With the coilovers, you can adjust, but as you say they are ALOT more expensive, but you do get what youve paid for..

Yeah around £300 is ok, if you can get the springs and fitted for that price then it cant be a bad price lol..

If i remember correctly Eibachs are the "best" springs to get for handleing and they lower about -35mm and are about £130 ish

There are others out there that lower -40mm and are a bit cheaper. I have some pi's that cost about £100 and are plenty better than standard even with standard shocks.

personally id save up a bit more and get coilovers (£500ish) rather than spend 300ish on springs and shocks

small pet peeve of mine when people confuse shocks and dampers. the shock absorbers are the springs, they absorb the shock. dampers control them.

lol true but nearly every where sells them as shocks  yes im a sheep and follow the pack

I know. I sometierms call them that myself and realise that I probably sound like a right n00b if there are any real mechanics around :D. My uncle laughed at me for it once when I was younger (he used to successfully build & race Alfas around europe. he once built a 500+ bhp 156diesel estate that was banned for being too quick).

hmm, thinking of going for Eibach Pro springs kit @ around £170. Lowers by 30mm so shouldn't compromise the dampers too much. The other options (spring + damper = £400 odd, coilovers £550) whilst no doubt better, seem to be a bit too much for not quite enough.

cheers for the help, i think i understand all the stuff now was just a bit confused whether two words ment the same thing.

BUT
