De-globeing indicators

OK, how the FUCK do you do this without ripping the shit out of the inside of the indicator when breaking up the orange globe !?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I've just done one and it's taken me over an hour and has left scratches all over the silver plating inside the indicator, not to mention scratching the inside of the clear lense. Not happy at all

How did everyone else do theirs ?

m8, the quickest and easiest way i found was, to dip them in hot water for a while and let the glue soften, then gently prise the lense away from the main body. now you can just take the orange globe straight out.

be patient as it will take a while for the glue to soften, and don`t force the lense or it will crack or break. submerge the two halves back in hot water to stick them back together and give them a firm press against each other. then put them in the oven for a while on a very low heat to dry them out.

hope this helps ya ollie

i put mine in the oven for about 5 mins
pulled them apart - watch out the glue doesnt go stringy and go all over the indicator

take the globe out put em in the oven again for a few mins then stick em back together

thats how i did mine

i used the oven method ... tried to use the boiling water and didn;t get on too well with that =/ u'll also get bad condensation using the water method.
and remember to push down the clips thats holding the lense in, otherwise you may find yourself cracking the lense anyways

I used the VERY HOT water method, worked a treat and I have heard it is safer then the oven method. ;)

As for the condensation, if you put them back on the car immediately, yeah, they will get condensation in them.......I left them lying on a radiator over night to fully dry out, never had any probs :D

I just took all my anger out on them witha pair of pliars.... Was done in minutes, didnt leave any noticeable scratches...

i spent ages trying the "break the globe" with pliers. didn't work for crap!! =/

I have no idea if this will work...i've still not got round to doing mine yet...but anyway...i was thinking..rather than trying to snip away at the globe inside...would it not be easier to melt it with a soldering iron perhaps? I dont think its likely to burst into flames but rather shrivel up enough to drop out.... perhaps something for someone to try who's mabye got a spare indicator to test on and tell us if it works first?

Nah Si, i tried the whole buring thing, didnt work too well..... u run the risk of blackening the inside..

What about - for all you rich kids - using a dremel to drill/cut the globe out and then just peeling the surround (or whetever's left) out ?

Just done it

Ok, just done this with a bowl of boiling water. piece of piss to do. 15 minute job. for one indicator.

Only thing is do not get any glue on the lense, just spent 30 mins trying to get it off. what a twat.

ive done a few in the oven, works really easy, stick em in, come back 15 mins later, pull them apart, remove globe, push together and back in the oven for 10-15mins, remove, go out side or somewhere cool and push together while they cool

Bit of a silly question this, but how hot does the oven need to be in degrees C?

i got condensation in one off my lenses after a stone cracked the lense,
i put it in the oven to dry it out, the oven was at it`s lowest temperature, only in for 7 mins, and melted the lense in that time,

ovens do vary ie:electric, gas, fan assisted, etc etc.

just try a couple of minutes at a time, and if they ain`t cooked enough put them back for some more.

Wish i'd known all this a year ago!
I'd heard bad stories about lenses cracking using the oven, so i got a pair of plyers and wire cutters and hacked the shit out of mine. Took about 45mins to do each one, cut my hand to shreds, and scratched the inside of the indicator - but nothing that cam be noticed.

Makes a huge difference to the look of the car, cos when the sunlight catches those orange globes, it lights the whole thing up orange.

Right,

I'll have a go at putting an old indicator (stone flew through it) in the oven after I have cooked and eaten my Sunday roast. :D

Its a fan assisted electric oven so I will do as you suggested boghopper and keep checking it every two minutes! The last thing I want to do is melt the damned thing!

sounds like a pucka idea ! & while thats simmering you can dice the carrots & add them to the side salad :p

Right,

Had a lovely dinner... :D

Done the indicator..

Using a Fan assisted oven...

Took 17 minutes at a constant 100 degrees to get the glue soft enough to prise the indicator apart.

I used a sharp knife to carefully work around the edge of the indicator before pulling the two halves apart.

The indicator is now back in (after having been de-globed) for a further ten minutes to re-set it...

The most tricky thing is to avoid getting the strands of glue inside the lens... luckilly I mannaged to avoid this...

I reckon i am confident to do it with the 'real' indicators now...

Right,

Indicators all done..

Took about 25 mins in total so not too bad at all.

Waiting for the glue to cool and set then I'll put them back on the car with thew oranage bulbs...

Will have to get hold of some 'orange' silvervision bulbs next... any ideas who does them?
